Reason #1 not to skimp on safety equipment

I wasn't there but I think an educated guess is that a tirewall tire streached his drivers side window net and his seat and body were leaning towards the open window because the car stops first and then the occupants. It was like a right hook from Marciano.

I would say that's a decent hypothesis.

Wow that was hard to watch. The Pombos are a great family and asset to the racing community. I bought one of Mark's old SMs and he has always taken my calls and done everything he can to help me long after the sale. I hope he has a smooth and complete recovery.
Great reminder for all of us to invest in safety equipment and use it each time we go out on track. I cant tell you the number of times I see people go out without their hans/fire suit etc and leave it sitting in the trailer.

The kink at the beginning of the straight is driven at 95 to 115 in most cars and then it is WOT until the brake zone for canada corner a 65-75 mph right turn. A cup will get to 155 - 160, a 996 or 997 GT3 will get to 145. The Kia that we are talking about (guesstimate 135 mph) So it looks like he lost brakes after removing maybe 20 mph. It is still a 70 mph corner so trying to go 110 is not going to be pretty. He is an asset on the track as he refused to collect the other two guys into his mishap.

Was there a full containment seat?
Was this a brake failure or ABS failure?
And Get Well Soon Mark Pombo!

Ouch! Brings back bad memories of a recent crash. Maybe a similar or slightly slower speed. I was luckier than Mark.
The thing that irks me and especially after having an accident, is that we all concentrate ($$$) on making our cars and equipment as safe as possible when I believe in this day and age we should be able to devise a far better impact barrier than concrete walls, armco, and old tyres. I know that the tyres do a pretty good job of absorbing a lot of the impact...but surely we can do better?? Netting, pneumatic or hydraulically filled barriers, better/more gravel pits. Something has to be better than we currently have. Apart from potential injuries even occasioning death, there are the massive costs to repair our cars and not all of us are running in a sponsored team. Just seems to be something that has been overlooked for far too long in my opinion!!!!!

The latest from the Pombo Racing facebook page (posted yesterday):
"Update on Mark: He arrived in Atlanta yesterday and is settled in for rehab at the Shepherd Center. He just completed his first morning of therapy. That stuff is hard to do normally! He's taking a nap now before the afternoon sessions start. He is making great progress. Thank you again to everyone for your continued thoughts and prayers. I'll keep u all posted as things keep moving."
