Default Engine Issues During The Clash @ Watkins Glen

Please contact me by pm or email at jfawsitt9@yahoo.com if you had any or heard of anyone having 911 air cooled engine issues during, just before or after The Clash at Watkins Glen. I'm talking specifically about topend issues including low leakdown #'s, broken piston ring etc.. I have identified 2 similiar engines at this point, that suffered the same damage to the topend's during the Clash weekend and immediately afterwards. Both of these engines were previously very healthy and had been rebuilt over the winter and run with no problems prior to this event.

Thanks,

Joseph Fawsitt

I used the 112 leaded octane in my air cooled with no issues so far, and another event after the clash. My fuel pump did fail, but it was a electrical problem.

The common fuel for the 2 engine's mentioned was 100 Unleaded, purchased at the track.

BTW, the 100 octane at the Glen is 10% ethanol. Not sure if that could be relevant to the engine issues, depending on how they were set up?

We had engine issues, but brought our own fuel.

I've always been hesitant to use fuel that has any ethanol...could that have been the problem?

All Sunoco unleaded race fuels, save the 98 octane 260GTX Unoxygenated, contain ethanol in some %.

The damage to both engines (broken piston rings on all cylinders) indicates an octane problem since both engines are setup to run on a minimum of 100 octane or very close to it.

Is there any fuel left over so you can test the octane rating?

Hi Van:

Good to finally meet you at the Clash. BTW your decals look great on my car, very nice quality.

Yes we have multiple samples both from the cars gas tanks and unused fuel in jugs pumped at the same time. I'm trying to track down a lab to complete the octane testing for us.

I used approx 295 gallons of that gas that weekend with no issues seen yet. All cars save one have been leaked and are normal

100 Octane is the critical # for our engines. I'm dropping samples off to the octane testing lab later this week from both cars and extra jugs purchased on the same day. I'll report back when I have the results in a couple of weeks.

We received the Octane test results back from the lab this week. The 2 samples tested at 97 Octane, not the 100 it was supposed to be.
