Default 964 Track Rubber

I track an RS America heavily and just wanted some opinions from some guys on here about track rubber.

Have run Hoosier R6's on the track lots and like them. Have also tried A6's, and was surprised, thinking they would get pretty greasy quickly, but they held up well. I have recently been running BFG R1's and have liked them a lot. Better than the Hoosiers. Anyone else have any experience with BFG R1's?

Furthermore, I see that BFG is now offering an R1S. Anyone tried these yet? If so, how are they?

And I am interested in trying Hoosier racing slicks. I run 17" wheels and they make a 235/265 setup in 17". Any advice on the R80 vs R100 compounds and how they compare to each other, and to the Hoosiers and BFGs in grip level and durability?

My car is about 2800lbs.

Thanks to all who take the time to read and reply.

Roland - search is yer friend here.

RE: R1s, great DE tire, lasts longer than the R6, arguably slower, a bit more progressive, less cost overall.

Forget slicks.

I have 18's so I run MPSC's for DE, BFG R1's for Club Racing.

Just can't justify the Hoosier cost of ~10k a year in tires to be competitive

I am running R1's on my 996 race car, my E36 M3 GTR, will be running them on my F360 GTC, and three other BMW race cars, and my other 996.

The R1s get about 18 heat cycles and slow only about 1-1.5 seconds. I have also run the R1-S's with great success. The R1-S's are about 1.5 seconds faster than the R1's. The R1-S's do start to slow after 4 laps, but if you're doing 20 minute sessions at a time you shouldn't notice much loss. The R1's are great for doing 20+ minute sessions.

I have never cared for Hoosiers due to their poor "drivability" IMO. The Hoosiers peak and fall too fast for my usage.

I used to run Nitto NT01s, Advan A048s, and Pirelli slicks. As much as I love the BFG R1/R1-S's, I am planning on trying some Michelin race slicks later this season.

To summarize, BFG R1's are spectacular, BFG R1-S's are even better. There is no other tire that can compare IMO.

Hi PJ.

@KaiB: Thanks for the input. I would argue the point of R1's being slower than R6's, although you did say arguably. I think their lap times are very close. I agree that they last longer, are more progressive, and are less expensive overall. Why forget slicks? I am just toying with trying them. I know they are more expensive and don't last, but they would be faster to throw on just once in a while to go for a lap time, no?

@MB_Fahrer: Thanks for the input. This is what I was looking for regarding the R1S's - someone who has driven them and can compare them to the regular R1's. I am going to give them a try later this year. I usually co-drive with a fellow and we run 15-20 minute sessions most of the time, not often in really hot conditions. Rarely above 85degrees. I think this tire will be a good choice. I agree with you on the Hoosiers. They are a good tire, but not as good as the BFG in my opinion. I also quite liked the Nitto Nt01's, but they just don't have the grip levels of the BFG's.

Maybe James can shed some light on what size 18" BFG R1 will work with a NB964?
The dimensions of R1 275/35-18 look very close to the MPSC 265/35-18, which will fit a 964 in the rear.
The 245/40-18 R1 looks like it may be too wide for the front and the 225/40-18 is a little small.
Thanks

Dave, I ran the 225/40 and the 265/35 on 8.5" and 10" wheels respectively. Having just got back from The Glen all I can say is these tires are AWESOME. Nice predictable give at the limit and less high maintenance than a Hoser(Hoosier). They were super consistent throughout the run session and it was very easy to adjust handling with pressures and sway bar settings.

Cheers, James

James, thanks for the recommendation.
Looks like those sizes are well balanced and I'll give a try.
