Default Odyssey Battery

Put a PC545 MJ in the car in October. Last time charged was in December. Car was at shop, they couldn't get it charged so bought a new one. Put the old one on the Battery Tender for two days got green light. Tester shows +13 volts. Should I trust it as a back up?

You could always take it to an Auto Zone type place and have it tested. They put a load on it, then measure voltage drop after the load to determine if it is good or not. I'd be inclined to think it is probably fine.

I am just in the middle of this same issue of a deeply discharged battery, it was suggested by a mfgr rep to place the battery in parallel with a good battery and the attach the charger to charge them both. A residual charge is needed to get a deep discharged battery to hold a charge. I'll let you know if this works I have one out in the garage cooking as we speak...

After sitting on the bench since yesterday morning it is still holding 12.75 on the meter. I'm going to put a load on it later today to see what happens.

Mine was completely discharged over a 2 month period from an unknown draw. I also put it on a slow charge tender and brought it back up slowly. It appears to be holding a charge now.

I've abused my 925 for 5 years and she still keeps on ticking, I would keep using it and put the new one as backup until it's needed!

Use a standard charger, not a trickle charger. I spoke to an Odyssey distributor rep and he told me to do so; trickle chargers he said don't feed enough amps to the sealed batteries, and these love amperage. I've been keeping mine (link) (PC925) on a 2A feed with no drama; hot; cold; DE weekends, etc

I had a 545 too, but it just didn't have enough juice to start the new engine reliably. got a new Braille that has much more CCA and is exactly the same size. This weekend at RA is the first time using it so we'll see....

I have used nothing but a Battery Tender+ on mine with perfect results for 5 years, don't even own a high amp charger..

The race shop tried a high amp, no joy but the 2 days on the Battery Tender seemed to do the trick. Battery still holding charge.

Checked the chart, didn't see my Deltran Battery Tender listed. Since the BT only has 750 mA output I'm sure it would not meet the standard for charging based on the criteria on the list. Guess the only way to find out is put it in the car and give it a test.

Did a little more poking around, appears Deltran and the Odyssey manufacturer got into a dispute a few years ago about reporting of specs. Apparently Odyssey listed PCA while the industry uses CCA so Deltran challenged them as misleading. Odyssey now shows the CCA rating in their specs.

And to Bob's comment re the 545, a low compression, old 150 HP motor doesn't take much to turn over!

I never had a problem with the 2.2. liter, 200 hp, carb engine.
but the new 330 hp EFI with coil packs engine really wants more power.

I now have a used 545 for sale...cheap...

I have been using a PC-680 for a few years with no problems to start a 3.6L

Get one of the new chargers that has settings for AGM and gel cell along with standard wet cell battries. They are aroud $100 and well worth the $.

i use the 680 for my 6.5 liter with 11:1 compression with NO issues. however, ive killded a few of them, they always end up as back ups, but all will work and start the car. alll have been deep discharged by strange current leaks, but all come back with a good charger. however, their voltage drop will change between batteries. they should not lose a charge when disconnected. 12.7 is a good voltage for stablization . 12.5 over time or stabilization could mean the battery is comprimised. much lower and toss it.

again, i have 3 of them. my star newest battery i just killed it 2-3 times this winter, but its still working well. all are between 3 and 8 years old.
