I just saw a photo of Dan's car after the dust settled. The roll-hoop and airbox were gone.

I watched it live on ABC as it happened, and you could tell something bad was going to happen on 1.5 mile banked track with 34 cars traveling at 220mph with no lifting in corners, and lots of rookies in race. Cars were dodging all over the track running in big groups within inches of one another. The crash was horrific with huge fireballs going up everywhere and cars and parts flying through hundreds of yards. Lots of yellow tarps placed over wrecked, burnt out hulks of cars as cleanup began. Ironic that Wheldon was in-car journalist for race and was talking a lot on wire during warm up laps to announcers in booth. Crash happened about 12 laps into race and it seemes as each lap went by things got scarier and scarier.
