Yep, Rick was nice enough to test the car yesterday for me at Monticello. I am heading there this weekend to shake it down some more and get used to the increased power and torque.
The forecast is looking sweet for NHMS. Should be a great season ender.
Nice pic Matt. Breeeoow.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
THE GOOD
Rick successfully tested the car earlier this week on the North course at Monticello which includes the 2 off camber left turns that have been overwhelming the AOS (or at least that's been the hypothesis). This was complicated by the fact that the car had too much oil in it initially.
I drove about 8 laps gradually warming up the car. The 3.4 was pulling better than the first time I tested it most likely because it wasn't ingesting oil any more. Without pushing the car I turned a 2:39 which is about 7 seconds quicker than my 2.5. I'm confident I can get the car down 2-3 seconds pushing it.
I was totally digging the new power although without an LSD it is tricky to lay down the power on exit. I'll have to look at my telemetry but I'm guessing that I was running about 20-25 mph more on the long straight!
I was a pig in you know what until....
THE BAD
On my last lap after the troublesome left hander I saw a cloud of smoke and then a ton of FIRE in my rearview. As I looked at the grass to pull over the flames disappeared so I coasted into the pits which fortuitously is right after the 2nd left hander.
I stopped and waived the marshall over to see if the back was still on fire. It was not. Nothing leaking. I think this was the same oil ingestion issue that the car experienced before.
I've been spending my wee hours reading quite a bit on Planet 9. This is apparently a well known problem with Boxsters and Caymans. Again, this assumes this is the problem.
I touched base with Rick by email who is at Daytona. Along with condolences he asked me to drop the car at his shop.
I am hoping that the engine did not suffer any harm from this.![crying](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/bigcry.gif)
This has been a hard mechanical season for me between the gearbox, the 2.5 munching itself, and now my 3.4 woes.
I'm confident Rick will get this figured out. Maybe I should take up biking. It's got to be cheaper!
and now....
THE UGLY
My poor kitty.

wow, you're lucky you didnt have a bigger fire and that iwas self-contained and snuffed itself out.
thats why its so critical on these cars to have a full Fire bottle system, whether its pull trigger or electronics. That boxster and Cayman engine compartment is impossible to reach with a hand-held fire bottle. yo uneed a system with a few nozzles , pull the trigger and hope the fire gets contained.
thats a pretty nice fire that went on there. i had a motor fire in our #09 grand am boxster. metal-wise, looked fine, but that thing was scorched. every bit of everything was toast, all rubber, electronics, and the insides, once it was pulled apart, were wasted.
amazing what fire like that does to scorch stuff.
anyway, sorry to hear about your woes, but really, its all just money , rubber and metal. most importantly you're safe and unharmed.
im sure rick will sort it all out. sorry for your headache.

Dave sorry to see, any thought into the cause? Was the original 2.5 an ims or d chunk fail? It's disturbing that you are doing everything you're supposed to and you still get a fail...this is not confidence inspiring...hmm gt3 3.6?...

Thanks guys.
Steve brings up a great point about safety which has of course been raised again and again on Rennlist. When I had my flameless loss of the 2.5 in NH it was a rare time that I was not wearing my suit. I decided not to ever do that again in my track prepped car. Irene is also getting a suit soon. For some reason HMS didn't have any suits that fit 6-foot tall women but they ordered a few for her to try on now.
Assuming the Pawxster lives, I want to upgrade from a small FE to a real fire system with engine placed hoses.

Dave,
Maybe time for out with the old, in with the new. It's the right color. All set to go. You'd be helping a fellow RL'r move to his dream. Plus you could try it out at VIR with us.
Just a thought..

I want the Pawxster to live again. I think if I were to ever 'upgrade' it would be to a Cayman prepped car or something like a 2-Eleven or Atom. Maybe we need a second car. Fortunately Irene does not read Rennlist.
