Default 968 track car with power steering issues

Buddy has a 95 968. It's setup well. Motons, heavier springs etc.

He runs 255s on the front and had been running RA-1s, then MPSCs and now BF Goodrich R1s. Ever since he started running the R1s he snapped the adjusting rod to the pully for the power steering pump twice.

Any ideas how to stop it without damaging the pump?

Should he convert it to a manual rack?

Can't answer that but I have a manual rack for a late 944 if anyone wants it. I guess I should post it in the for sale section...
I run my track car with the power steering rack, but no belt, and many of the components removed. But, I only run 225 up front, and I've always used Hoosiers.

Maybe he has a suspect pump or the belt is misaligned... That's not normal.

Really haven't experienced any problems with the 968's p/s. Is he running a Lindsey Racing underpulley?

I also have a manual rack, etc., for the late 944/968. that I'd be willing to part with. Great on the track, but takes some effort when maneuvering around the paddock.

Check the other locating points in the p/s pump for roundness. Sometimes once it breaks it oblongs the other holes and then you have alignment and tension issues.

Let us know what you find.

Since he has a Lindsey engine he called them and is waiting for a reply.

I too am very interested in the cause. He is just pissed that he keeps losing track days.

Hey Richard - why did you ask if he has the Lindsay underpulleys? I just put them on my car - are there issues with them?

Electric pumps work great, less weight and less filling also.

Or .......... he could just get a 911.

I did that 10 years ago and just dumped the pump. Still with 255's PS is nice. My advice is to make sure you have the long bolt that is used as a pivot point is tight to the engine. If it loose it will put all the load into the adjuster. So tighten the adjuster then tighten that long bolt to lock thing down.

This is key on the alternator so should work on the PS pump. Also make sure the adjuster is aligned straight. If you don't have the right spacers it can be at an angle to the belt and also cause it to break.

Is it possible that the front tire is hitting the pump under load?
