Default Grand Prix - The Killer Years

I did a search, and didn't see any posts about this... but if it's an enzo, it still might be new for some people.

The Killer Years - Grand Prix documentary. Great footage and driver interviews. It's a shame so many great drivers were lost.

Thanks Van, watching it now. Excellent production but very sad.

Good documentary. Gran Prix with James Garner is an excellent movie based on this period - a lot of the footage of the movie is actually from real Gran Prix races - even some shots of current drivers.

Thanks for posting that Van.

A couple years ago a video was posted on RL chronicling many of the crashes in which F1 drivers perished. Truly frightening stuff -- no seat belts, drivers practically sitting in gasoline baths, nonexistent track safety standards ... I just checked and the video has been pulled.

A great documentary of a poignant and tragic period that I recall all too well as a kid.
I enjoyed this sad memorial and its place in history to get us to where we are.

Same here. A great, but very tragic era indeed. Back before Penske took over MIS and turned it into NASCAR only, they put a road course in the infield and used part of the oval banking for high speed portion in the early 70's and was lucky enough to see Parnelli Jones and Mark Donahue go at it in Trans Am there. Of course Donahue died later doing Formula 1. Ditto for Jochen Rindt who was the best driver I ever saw race. In those same years, he raced a 3 liter Porsche on same track with the unlimited Can Am cars driven by Bruce McLaren and Dennis Hulme. Unbelievable racing with Rindt garnering big following with his late braking for curves and running full speed on choppy apron leading onto banking off of infield road course. The dude was fearless. I remember saying to race friends that he wouldn't live long driving that way in those times with little attention paid to safety. Sure enough he didn't live that much longer after that race. What a race driver he was. Right up there with Jimmy Clark. Another great driver I saw 15 years later was Senna as he won Detroit Gran Prix a couple times and had huge following. And he joined the so many other race drivers tragically killed. It's very tragic that it took so many racing deaths to get to where racing is today. Now it's far more dangerous to drive on public roads than closed race courses.

I just discovered this documentary - one of the best F1 pieces I've ever seen.

Sad show, but well done.

For those who are interested the book "The Cruel Sport" is an excellent read about those early years.
