Default Trailex pre-pruchase questions

Given that these are scarce as hen's teeth on the used market, I think I'd like to purchase a new open Trailex.

Before I make the call, may I ask:

Can a deal be made on price.
Bolted vs. welded.
Open floor vs. closed.
Will the standard ramps be OK.
Can I yank a light 964 up with the 2 spd. hand winch?

Or, is there a better deal out there for a lightweight? We have Tommys down in So. Oklahoma.

Thanks, Kai

Bolted

Most people go open floor.....depends how much you want to spend. Closed floor isn't a bad idea.

How low is your 964? I use race ramps to load GT3s, cup cars, and other really low cars.

I've hauled a 2.5ton Bentley up with the hand winch.....probably was a bad idea, but it's been done. 964 is no problem.

Feel free to contact us if you would like. We have a couple open trailers in stock or we can assist with ordering one.

Kai,

I'm in the same boat looking for a trailer. As you probably found out, there aren't really many used ones around. I started shopping around and found two dealers nearby that are steeply discounting Featherlite trailers brand new. I'm pulling the trigger on a 2011 model (2012's are out now) for less than I've seen most used ones advertised for. Might be worth making some phone calls to dealers in your area, pm me if you want specifics.

Bolted is fine

open floor allows you work under the car and allows for easier hookup if you tie down to the chassis instead of the wheels it also gives you a space to store you Race ramps if you need them

there are different length ramps I have 11' and need Race ramps to load my 993, whether or not you need them will be determined by how low and projected the front splitter is

Most of us drive up, you get used to it

Thanks all. David, I'm a VA boy from the bowels of Fauquier County (say no more!).

Bill, as usual, the pics are great. It is because of the work you (and a few others) have done here that I was able to discuss brakes "integellently" with my shop - and I'm very happy with the outcome.

I've got a call/email into Trailex. Sadly I sold my farm truck and replaced it with a half ton Silverado, so open it must be.

The drive up doesn't bother me at all, I've been doing that on the farm since my legs were long enough to reach the pedals.

With a new dedicated trailer, optioning a winch just makes sense - who knows what may need to be dragged up.

Silverado should have no problem with any open trailer. Before I went enclosed I was looking closely at the featherlite. Not as light as the trailex but it was close if you figured the weight of a closed floor. Closed floor will keep the car cleaner too. They were about 4700 new when I was looking last year.

...until you get an electric winch and realize how much nicer it is to do it that way. If you're going to spec out a new trailer, I'd go for a winch. I love my Trailex, but one nice thing about the Featherlight and some of the other trailers is that because they have a deck that sits lower to the ground, you need a much shorter and lighter ramp.

If I could find a used Trailex 80180 I would be a seller of my Featherlite.
Let us know if they are flexible on the price a bit.

Yeah i would too, but mine came w/o a winch and i had to deal w/ it.

I did buy a winch stand and will get around to installing it one of these days

Just curious, what don't you like about your Featherlite versus a Trailex?

I bought a used CT-7541EB last year; I really like it; my first. It has a few add-ons; winch (manual), box, tire rack; electric brakes; open floor; 9' ramps which my lowered GT3 can clear without helpers. I bought it sight unseen for the most part based on the reputation of the previous owner.

I would ask about any services that have been performed, the condition of the wheels, tire, and brakes; what kind of hook ups does it have; any broken spot welds on the the cargo box, etc.

Best advice I can give on open Trailex trailers = Find a different brand. There are similar aluminum open trailers available for half the price. E.g. r and r trailers.
