Default video noob..editing software

What software do you all use for really basic video editing (cut, title, not much more) and what file format is the a useful output? I'm starting with aiptek video in .mov format.

I use Race Render, it's cheap and very easy to use.

I bought the pinnacle, but I got sick of trying to add effects and it sending me to purchase some other effects package and not being sure if that package would have the next effect I wanted. Pinnacle is a rip off.

+1 for MS Movie Maker. Works well with my Contour camera files. Personally I post to Vimeo, but some apps are making it easier to upload/share with different sites. Vimeo still needs to update their mobile viewing to compete with YouTube.

Contour recommends this (from an email rec'd asking this question):

"If you are looking for a way to edit your movies, we can recommend a free tool called MPEG Streamclip. You can download it from www.squared5.com."

How do you guys with Smartycams edit and post your videos? The format of my video won't play with my MS stuff so I had to use the VLC media player and I don't have a program to edit the video.
Not sure what to do with them. Im doing good just to play them

SmartyCam lets you store the file as either an MOV or AVI, you have to make your choice prior to recording. I believe the Movie Maker prefers the MOV format. The SmartyCam soft ware uses VLC in its software that you down load seperately.

The manual suggests using the AVS Video Manager. Downloadable off the internet .

MS Movie Maker on my computer won't import a .mov format. I have to use VLC or some other editor to reformat my AIPTEK movies into .mpeg or.wmv so that MM will accept it.

+1 for RaceRender; written and supported by a fellow Rennlister, and very easy to use.

Try this: Rename one existing vid that you cannot open with the windows media player from ".mov" to ".mp4". I think the .mp4 can be read by MM (altho you shld do a quick Google to see what formats are supported). Then try to play it thru the windows player. For me, believe it or not, it works without any vid editing/transfer reformatting program. I have to do this to create a Traqmate vid overlay thru TrackStudio (Contour creates a .mov vid which is not compatible) and it works for me and my computer at least ... FWIW

Premiere Elements for either XP or Mac is very easy to learn/use.

MMaker for starting out is quite a lot bang for the buck (free with most Office installs). For more advanced, Sony Vegas Pro is exceptional, IMHO.
