I just saw a discussion on an F1 tech session where "mobile1 0W50 racing" was presented as "brand new". True? If so there may be limited real world experience with it... The focus was on lighter weight thinner films for reduced rotational drag, which is a classic qualifying only trick...

Mobil has had it out for awhile although their marketing dept for years has been great about changing a little additive and then advertising it as a "brand new" product. I'm not sure if that is the case currently.

I have no empirical data, BUT I will tell you that a friend of mine used it in his race car and switched to Motul 300V after back to back oil analysis. He said the 300V proved better in temp and tests.

So his data showed him that there was a better alternative around the same price.

why would the presence or absence of a catalytic converter be pertinent to the choice of oil

Do a Google search using these terms:

ZDDP catalytic

Spoke with L & N last week, making a change to Cyntec 20 - 50 for the 951 S and 5 - 40 for the 987s from Mobil-1. Is a P-car approved oil. Interesting the 20 - 50 states on the bottle tht it is not for cars newer than 1993. The 951S is tracked only and oil gets dumped around 750 miles, the 987s is on the street only and is dumped 3,000 or every 6 months. Plus Pep Boys has a special currently on Cyntec at 5qrts for net $22.00 post rebate. I did hear Doug Fehan discussion of the Mobil-1 zero viscosity 0 - 50 but have to wonder about the possible custom blend corvette and Pratt-Miller may be getting.

Mike...LMAO! Exactly.
Any reason you aren't running the Castrol TWS 10-60? Curious as that is what I run in my M3. I assume it doesn't hold up to track temps?

High concentrations of Zinc and Phosphorus, which add to the longevity of parts with metal-to-metal contact, will eventually plug up a CAT. I personally use the Mobil 1 15-50 Motorcycle oil in my air cooled car as it has the highest concentration and I have no cat. It's about $10 per QT.

Now back to the 0W-50 debate....

At the risk of embarrassing myself, if the engine does not burn oil, then why would the additives of an oil end up in the exhaust. Is it because there is some residual oil in the cylinder that does, in fact, get burned?

Dave, here's a data point for you. At operating temperature of 100C, 0W-50 and 15W-50 should be the same viscosity. It is only at 0C where you would see that the 15W is appreciably thicker than the 0W.

What Gary said but I use Valvoline dino VR1 (high ZDDP) and change often.

These newer motors with variable valve timing use oil as a hydraulic fluid as well as for lubrication. That's a whole different thing altogether.

Just read an article about Group 5 oils, which Motul 300V is one. Not made from petroleum but various vegetable and animal oils. Supposed to have higher heat resistance, better cleaning properties, less deposits. Redline also has a line of Group 5 oils.

Anyone know more about these or have used them?

I cant say that I've noticed any difference one way or the other.... but the ZDDP number is bigger, so it must be better right?

That overpriced crap is for the E46 M3. Mine is an E36 M3.
