Z-man, I have a low mileage (14K) '06 Cayman S garage queen that I am selling at a reasonable price within a month or so, let me know if it might interest you......

A slightly prepped 6-GT3 is going to be awfully tough to beat for a DE car. It can hang with most cars in the Instructor run groups (unlike a Cayman S)... which, let's face it, have some serious bling these days.

Purchase price aside, what is your budget for repairs and maintenance? When you play with big expensive toys, expect big expensive bills.

LOL! I can do that in a ratty 1997 M3 with 101,000 miles on the original motor! But, alas, no 25 year old bushings or 15 year old un-rebuilt Konis.

Z... be sure you price out some modern stuff. GT3 rotors? 18-19" tires? Brake pads? A second set of rims? http://www.suncoastparts.com/category/996gt3.html - $700 for front "steel" rotors!
imho, those prices alone should scare you enough to know this won't happen.
imho, 996TT is too heavy. Cayman S or GT3 would be the most fun.. but you don't like 911s and the rear weight bias.. so.. that leaves us with a Cayman S. (or look for a used Spec Boxster)

I must say - we've had a Cayman, Boxster, C5 Z06 and now finally a 6 GT3. Frankly - I would've saved a lot of money by just getting the GT3 from the start. Cayman was fun, but even with some work was considerably slower than this car. I won't touch on the Boxster - performance wise, very similar. Although, for what it's worth - somehow, it was more fun to drive on track. Corvette was brutally fast, all stock with some very large Hoosiers it was the car to beat if driven well. GT3 is not just a car to drive - it's an experience. Car seems to be an extension of you, it does what you ask of it. You feel everything in this car! I've yet to drive it a single time and not get a huge grin on my face. And raw speed - intoxicating. This past weekend I was time trialing with NASA and it was probably one of the fastest 5-10 cars there (out of 200-300 participants), so you certainly won't be the slow one out there.

996 GT3 -- best bang for the buck period. Not even close. Bullet proof engine/tranny (need to get past the factory LSD and go with a Guard however). GT1 block, dry sump. Street car can hang with a lot of fully prepped race cars. Drive it to and from the track. What's not to like?
Cayman, I'd be afraid to blow an engine even with the aftermarket bandaid fixes.
There are 6-GT3s out there at very reasonable prices.

some of the best advice I got regarding "track" cars is
Don't ever track a car your not willing to LEAVE on the track I have seen TOO many GT3's destroyed to take that type of risk
So any car you drive to the track is problematic with this rule...since you can't get home.... Given your budget of $40k you have LOTS of options....tons really....there are plenty of FAST cars out there in that range.....just not many of them are Porsches :>)
Since you also want street legal & drive to/from the track makes things harder too...since many things that make a car nice on the street make them suck on the track..... the opposite is also true....
Since you already have a 944 and are familiar with them...maybe a spec944....plus a truck-trailer.....
But its hard to argue with a C6 Z06...with coilovers, brakes and R comps they FLY around the track.....plus get 28mpg on the highway!

there are many good cars out there. but if you are talking about cayman S gen1 and 996gt3... i dont care how much more the 6gt3 is over the gen 1 cay, just buy the gt3, you WILL end end saving more money. how do i know? i have had 4 cayman S and 11 GT3's. i did many experiment, GT3 is cheaper, fails less often.
you can may cay s very fast and it handles better than GT3, but you have to work "around" many issues. i got tired of working around issues. i just want a car that i can drive and not worry about issues.

One alternative viewpoint. Get a spec miata and a race license. Bet you have more fun racing the miata than DE'ing the much faster GT3 for about the same budget (allowing for the odd racing incident).
