If you notice, I too have a second oil cooler in that location. Mounting in the center may not be an option, and the outlet air will be going into your oil coolers on the 964.

Is that a 993 cooler or a 911 carrera cooler with the fan? Mine is mounted like the drivers side, but upside down. Did you need special brackets to mount it to the chassis?

Here's where I put mine. You're looking up at the rear deck which has been cut away with air coming in through naca duct in rear quarter window. pump is in same loc'n as geoffrey's just other side.

You're going to want to put a switch to turn pump on as you're not supposed to run pump on cold fluid as it's too thick for pump and it will be damaged. mine is switched on by motor ecu and fuild temp, but other folks with just switch i've heard run a lap or two and then just put it on.

regarding over fill... I just calculated how much fluid the lines held and over-filled trans that much.

Mine is a 993 cooler and since the factory secondary oil cooler bracket was no longer available from Porsche, I simply made my own.

RE overfilling, I used quick disonnect hoses to the trans and fill the gearbox by turning on the pump and sucking the fluid out of the container until it is at the specified height (10mm from the oil fill plug). I end up with 5 liters in mine.

A small pair of electric SPAL fans can really help things -

Has anyone retro-fitted a late GT3 Cup cooler setup to an earlier G50?

The late GT3 Cup cooler uses the engine coolant to maintain gearbox temp, so retrofit into an air cooled car wouldn't work. A very, very, early 1999 cup cooler was air cooled.

In my GT2 I use a very large Earls cooler something like 10x12"

I fabbed up a frame & mount and it is mounted on the underside of what would be the rear seat.

I have a big electric fan controlled by Motec.

My temps are always cool.

I am running a 996 GT2 6 speed cable race box; however I ran this same cooler setup with my G50/52 previously and always ran cool.

Too cold in the garage to get pics now :-)

Btw - I did use rubber isolators on the cooler mount to help keep vibration from hurting the cooler.

I was thinking more in terms of the internal parts

Bill, that pump appears to be gear driven at the trans?

Great thread.

Something I really hadn't thought about. I'm going to add a LSD this spring and will have to talk this over with Geoff at ASG.

Geoffrey, your car is awesome!

OK I'm ready to order parts to install this set up. Pump mounted on the vertical bulkhead behind the passenger seat. Oil cooler with fan attached just above that onto a hole cut into the sheet metal where the rear seat used to be. A mechanical temp gauge with sensor in the oil line near the gear box. Simple toggle switch to turn on pump and fan when temp gets above 180-200 degrees.

Questions:
1. Do I need a check valve to prevent oil draining back into the gearbox and over filling it?
2. Should I use a relay in the circuit or just run 12V to pump & fan?

Use a relay for sure.

I did not use a check valve but my installation is significantly lower than yours. Do install a filter before the pump in case of gearbox damage.

I'll put a filter on the parts list. Thanks
