Default Coilover Advice

I'm looking for a set of coilovers for my non PASM Cayman S. It is a street driven DE car with GT3 LCA and front bar, Tarett rear bar, and recently ordered Rennline rear toe control arms. I've rejected JRZ and Moton because of cost and complexity. My choices seem to be Bilstein PSS9, KW Variant 3, or Sachs. Sachs are new to the market and I can't find out much about them. Any knowledge on any of these products would be appreciated. Thanks.

Having used the KWs for some years now I am sure you won't be disappointed if you choose these. Excellent for a dual purpose car. They really do ride extremely well over rough or irregular surfaces and undulations. You can run quite high spring rates too if needed and you don't drive around town with regrets. They have great high speed release valving which affords them a 'cake and eat it' status.

I have Moton CS's and they aren't cheap but not at all complex. Pretty easy to adjust, dial where you want it. The costs for Moton's has dropped a bit since I purchased them 2 years ago.

C'mon Bill. Go for the Motons. You know that you're a tinkerer and besides, I'll help you.

I bought the PSS9's first and found them too lightly sprung for my car on track. Bilstein was no help when I tried to upgrade the springs. Then upgraded to the Moton Clubsports with a stiffer spring package and that has done the trick.

Sachs is a very good damper, and is (I believe) standard on GT3 Cup cars. KW is also pretty decent with the proper springs.

I run KW V3 on our non pasm cayman S. They are great dual purpose set up. I am sure you will like them. Consider some camber plates or GT3 control arms for the front....

My first choice would be Motons, and second Sachs. Sachs were the dampers on the RS Spyder and spec shocks on GT3 Cup series cars, superb quality.

I had KW V3s and then KW Clubsports on my Cayman S, both worked well. The KW CSs have more damping and significantly stiffer springs, they weren't very comfortable on the street, the car staying the garage more but it was slightly quicker at the track.

Both were better than the Bilstein PSS9s on my Spec Boxster. The KW's are two way adjustable, but be aware to getting to the upper adjusters requires a few hours of work removing the trunk's interior to get to them. I finally cut a 1" hole at the rear shock mount interior trim panel and put a cover plug over it.

Could someone direct me to a 964 spring rate chart for the KW V3's and Clubsports? I've exhausted the internet and Rennlist forum. For the life of me cannot locate this data.

Many thanks,

Dan

PSS10's are a completely different damper than the PSS9's at about the same price $2,500). I was very impressed by them in the 996 Spec series. We revalved them ($600.) to match 700/900 spring rates. I believe they come with 250/375 (+/-) spring rates which would be a nice upgrade from OEM but not too stiff for a street car.....

JRZ RS dual adjustable with no external canisters - $3200 for shocks, Eibach double springs kit with tenders - $800.

Thanks Bill! KW seems to have some weird spring rates? Soft in front stiff in rear compared to other vendors. Also the split difference form frt to rear seem to be wider.

none of KW or PSS come with 600+ springs and after one counts in the price to get the re-valved it becomes clearer how JRZs and Motons prices were set.

so unless one will get PSS10 kit how it comes with kit springs it makes sense to get JRZs. PSS10 kit springs are single 450/600lbs if I am not mistaken with no tenders. cayman will probably want close to 0 split from front to rear as it is 50/50 car so, there is definitely something to think about there.
