Default Shaving used tires

I have a set of new Toyo RA1's that I was going to take to Buttonwillow tomorrow morning to get shaved. It is now supposed to rain all weekend. Can I run the Toyos full tread during the raining weekend then have them shaved after the event? Any adverse effects? I have never run across this situation before and need some input. Thanks in advance.

Nope they will only cut them new. Grit in the tread will destroy the cutter.

Most of the shavers won't shave a used tire, but a guy I use in CT used to ASK me to run them on the street first, to get the nice and seated. Then the shaving would come out PERFECTLY round. So ask your shaver.

No chance to shave a used tire. However the RA-1 shoudl be just fine shaved or not. Full tread tires are slow initially, but in my experience always lasted the same and were just as good once worn down as shaved.

Took a set to be shaved and they were surprised that I wanted to shave a NEW set. I asked (because I had been told that shops wouldn't shave used tires) and they said that they would (and usually do) shave used tires.

I got a set of new tires shaved for me. I ran two or three sessions in the rain till I dicovered they were the wrong size. (I run square tires on staggered rims). Tire shop was in error so they took em back and said they'd shave further for some guys qualifying tires.

Thanks for the info guys. How much faster are the shaved Toyos vs. non-shaved on a 3.1 mile course?

After a session or two there's not really a difference IMHO.

ha ha.

Actually, with full tread, WCGT and Touring has data to support near 2 seconds a lap. If I was to guess, certainly 1 second, and probably 2. by the time you get the tread down to the uneven wear tread depth of an old toyo RA1, its going to be slightly heat cycled out. the good news, is that the toyo doesnt heat cycle out like a hoosier, but it does get slower with age and a full tread tire will last a full season in many cases!
