The best track in Australia by far ... and it's a public road between race days.
Several decades ago it had very few trackside barriers, and you could literally launch yourself of the side of a mountain at the top of the track if you got it wrong.
Look for the dipper in that clip after the high speed run across the top of the mountain .. then two wheel it down through the dipper and onto a 300km/hr straight. They put a kink in at the end of the straight some years back to slow everyone down a bit !!!
In a V8 with grunt its awesome.

I watched the annual 'King of the Mountain/Bathurst 1000' at Mt Panorama from when I was just a kid. I wasn't a typical car crazed type, but there was something about Mt Panorama and the very best drivers in the country doing battle. As one of the drivers said in the clip, its a 'stop the nation' event. Aside from the kink at the end of the downhill staight that was added to control terminal speeds before the left hander to the finish line, the track is exactly as it has been for decades. Its a bloody classic.
Its a public road for most of the year, so if you are visiting Sydney make time to go up and drive it.

Bathurst is our version of Indy 500 where everyone is aware that it's on. We've all grown up watching it and seeing folklore and the stuff of legend unfold on the TV. Great stuff. The Europeans call it the Mini 'Ring and you can see why. Don't forget that the images never show just how steep the Mountain is. Hope to run there next year.

Here's the outright lap record taken by the Winner of this year's event's practice. Pretty sharp stuff.
