Default NASA issues and the demise of 944SuperCup

I'm bringing a discussion over here that started on page 25 of the "Summit Point Club Race; Who's In" thread.

It was recently announced that the 944SuperCup class will cease to exist in 2011, and I assert that it's largely because of frustration among us competitors over the inability to establish parity between the Turbos and NA's. 944SC is still a fantastic spec class with great cars, racing and competitors. We'll likely continue anyway, and there are a lot of places to race these cars nonetheless. There are assertions of cheating, of course, so take it from there.

Too bad - I just bought my 944SC car this year, and raced for only my second time last weekend.

I don't know how you consider SC a spec class with 3 different engine possibilities and open choice on tires and suspension....

Maybe we could suggest the serie a "bring what you run" SC class which would allow almost any S2/951/968? Or have an SC class for 3.0L and a SCT for Turbos.

Engine modifications would be free, as long as bore and stroke is same as stock, boost limited to stock settings.

Standard body panels.

Only a suggestions that would allow my car to race with the 944 cup guys

Was that the whole field. ;-)

From what I have seen, the simple shortage of available cars, and their cost of acquisition and maintenance, kept fields very small.

Does SP3 still exist in the PCA, or is that dependant on 944SC? I'd imagine that SC cars would fit in the top of GTS-2, or in GTS-3 with light weight. Your title referred to "NASA issues" too, but you didn't clarify? (Edit, read the orig thread from page 25 on, but still not sure what you mean, GUMS)

Turbos will always be hard to to equalize, as they make power in very different ways than the larger displacement NA's, even at equivat eak power levels. Balancing the disadvantage of lag vs. the advantage of flat TQ curve on boost is tricky, at best. And cheating, if you're so inclined is best done with a turbo ;-)

I've heard that part of the Demise is directly related to the HMFWIC ? Any truth to this ?

We were 4 951. Those are the 2 fastest

Actually, there was a lot of SP1 and SP2 cars (15-16). No SP3. And yes SP3 still exist within PCA.

The shortage of cars seems to be the cause for the demise.

You can cheat with a turbo car? Oh, you meant that we can add boost.

Now I understand

More seriously, the speed differential between Cup and SuperCup is not very huge. SC's are handicaped because of weight. More power + more weight. Not lots more speed.

I have an SC car and I drove a Cup car at the Nationals at VIR this year. To me, the Cup car I drove (middle field 924S) was a lot more fun to drive than the my own SC, even when I put the "boosted map" for non PCA events.

Thats why I think I will switch to Cup next year. But if I could, I'd keep both.

There must be a solution to keep SC on...

Of NASA? If so, not surprising. But I thought the 944 Cup guys got wise and declared independence from NASA and their endless nonsense?

SC cars (or what would be an SC car) are quite plentiful in the Great Lakes NASA GTS-2. We are having some great racing and getting faster all the time. HP is staying about the same but aero is added
