F1: Alonso, Webber Doubt Massa Key To 2010 Title
The two championship leaders don't expect Felipe Massa to have a real role in the final points outcome...
Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso are 1-2 in the World Championship with four races to go.
Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber do not believe that Felipe Massa is a key figure in the now four-race battle for the 2010 World Championship.

While Webber's teammate Sebastian Vettel is still in the hunt, as are both McLaren drivers, Alonso is able to count on the support of his Ferrari teammate Massa from now until next month's Abu Dhabi season finale.

Brazilian Massa confirmed this week that his remaining task in 2010 is to try to take points off Alonso's four championship rivals.

But Alonso said on Thursday: "I think if I'm doing well, as I have in the last two races, it's not such a big difference."

Red Bull's championship leader Webber agrees that Massa's role is not a big advantage for Alonso.

Felipe Massa (Pictured) has said Ferrari wants him to help teammate Fernando Alonso win the championship.
"We've seen it once (at Hockenheim) where Fernando benefits a lot," the Australian told reporters at Suzuka.

"To make it work they need to be basically together on the track, so whether we'll see it again ... I don't think Fernando needs much help from Felipe," said Webber.

He doubted Massa would be deployed by Ferrari as a true No. 2, such as in the '90s when Eddie Irvine actively slowed down rival cars to help his then teammate Michael Schumacher.
"Holding people up intentionally is not cricket," said Webber, "but it won't happen."

Red Bull duo stay on top at Suzuka

By Matt Beer Friday, October 8th 2010, 06:33 GMT

Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber maintained Red Bull's one-two formation in the second Friday practice session at Suzuka.

Just they had in the morning, the Red Bull duo wasted no time in moving to the head of the times, with Vettel hitting the front after 20 minutes and remaining there for most of the rest of the session.

The only man able to head last year's Suzuka winner was his team-mate Webber, who took on soft tyres slightly earlier and therefore nipped ahead of Vettel for a couple of minutes at the one-hour mark.

But once on the same rubber, Vettel responded to Webber's 1m31.860s with a 1m31.465s to ensure a clean sweep of Friday top spots.

Lewis Hamilton's crash in the first session heavily impinged on his running this afternoon, with the McLaren not ready to take to the track until there were just eight minutes left. The Briton crammed in seven laps but was only 13th, two seconds slower than Vettel.

After its quiet morning, Ferrari showed its hand in the second session. Fernando Alonso led the way before the Red Bulls got up to speed, and ended up fourth, 0.8 seconds off the pace, and just ahead of his team-mate Felipe Massa and McLaren's other title contender Jenson Button.

Renault goes into the weekend in very promising shape. Despite a high-speed spin through the gravel in the S curves - an incident replicated by Virgin's Lucas di Grassi and Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi - Robert Kubica took third place again. His Suzuka rookie team-mate Vitaly Petrov also held a top three position for a while and ended up seventh.

Michael Schumacher remained quick and took eighth, three places ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. The seven-time champion ran very wide at Degner late on but got out of the gravel without repeating Hamilton's meeting with the barriers.

Adrian Sutil (Force India) and Nico Hulkenberg (Williams) completed the top 10, with the latter's team-mate Rubens Barrichello losing mileage to an engine issue.

Alonso calm about Ferrari's pace

By Jonathan Noble Friday, October 8th 2010, 09:21 GMT

Fernando Alonso sees no reason to be worried about Ferrari's form in the dry or wet at Suzuka, even though title rivals Red Bull Racing dominated the opening practice sessions in Japan.

Alonso could manage no better that fourth quickest on the opening day of action - but more worrying than that he was more than eight tenths adrift of pace-setter Sebastian Vettel.

But the Spaniard was far from disheartened by the situation – and reckoned it important to keep calm about his form especially with wet weather forecast to hit qualifying on Saturday.

"I am sure there is speed to come for tomorrow," said Alonso. "Always on Saturday you put everything on the car – the best pieces and the best set-up etc. but I guess for them there is more to come as well.

"On Saturday you put the race package, so no surprises today – we knew Red Bull were quick here, maybe this is the best circuit of the four for them, so we need to push them as I said yesterday. We need to try to make them push as well and not to have an easy weekend."

Alonso was well aware that the expected mixed weather for the rest of the weekend could make the event more of a lottery than a wholly dry event, but still said there was everything to play for on Sunday.

"Always when it is wet it is mixed so I expect a difficult day for everybody," he said. "We need to be at the best position possible but knowing the race is on Sunday and with the dry conditions we expect for Sunday anything can happen.

"This is the circuit where normally you have the possibility to overtake so we don't need to be too worried tomorrow – in whatever position we are.

"I expect tomorrow some teams will be quick in wet conditions, like maybe Mercedes or Renault or Williams, and maybe they can have a very good qualifying."

Speaking about the form of Ferrari in wet conditions, Alonso said: "We did a couple of laps in Australia then we went to dry tyres, in China we were okay and in Spa it rained Friday morning and we were P1 so overall I feel not too worried about the wet performance, but we know in wet cases the luck factor is a big thing.

"You can have a lap with a little bit less water and you gain two seconds so we need to be in the right place in the right time with the right tyre – so in these kinds of conditions they mix everything."

How has Alonso done this year in the wet?

The saving grace is it might help his engine situation.

Of course, I am sure he is 8 tenths off friday practice to sandbag by saving his engine.

Please let me here the word Kablammo just once in the next 4 races...

No Lewis, he is running flat out .................

Funny how Donkey kong Pete, is trying to equate Massa's move over in Germany, as being equivalent to Faux 7 's career of doing such .....

Alonso don't need team orders to pass the fragile one, he is dangerous and dirty like stool , Ferrari wanted both cars to finish and knew a battle would have only Alonso finishing ......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNHYD1ZcPDo

Massa's driving has always been desperate( he was taught by stool ) and his passes are non existent , he only got in front of Alonso because of Vettel's dirty driving , not because of Baby Stooley's speed.....

I do predict a future elsewhere for Baby stooley ........

What's happening with Practice Session #3? Track is green but nothing changing. Is it raining?

Edit: Nevermind...I see it was washed out, but qual may be postponed too...just when I can see it live at a decent hour...

What are the FIA regs regarding qual?
If they can't get qualifying in, do they set the grid by driver or constructors points?
