Default VR-1 20w50 in a Spec Boxster?

Changing the oil in our spec boxster and have heard that many of the 911 racers use Valvoline VR-1 20w50 racing oil. Any of the you spec guys ever use it? Was going to put in 5w40 Syntec but didnt find it at my usual sources and thought VR-1 might be better in a track car anyway. Lemme know your thoughts. Thanks.

Not 100% sure but does the spec Boxsters have Vario-Cam? I believe that has something to do with oil weight in the lower end of the number.

I am using Castrol 5w50 Synthec in my 09 Carrera S for DE and such.

I run VR-1 in my 911 cause of the high levels of ZDDP and its good inexpensive dino oil that doesn't find a way out like the syns I have tried.

If it has a vario motor in it you may want to consider a xx40 weight like Redline or Motul 10w40...or if you run a true race oil like Redline 40 be prepared to change it more frequently because there aren't any detergents in it.

Yeah, the whole vario-cam thing has me wondering about the lower number, but I always thought that was only at start up. Once it's at operating temp, it's a 50 weight oil just like a 5W50. I actually talked to Redline yesterday and the tech support guy recommended straight 40 wt racing oil for a track only car. He said it's actually more of a 15w40 than a true straight weight.

Lots of folks swear by Brad Penn 20w-50 which I think is a dino or blend also.

when car runs long time close to redline you want more viscosity so it is a trade off to some degree - 20w50 will be bad for valve lifters at cold plus variocam - well, my mechanic told me that generally for car that gets a lot of abuse it is typical to flush off oil at the end of May and put in 15w50, at the end of the season when morning temperatures get to lower-40s flush oil off again and pour in 5w50 or 0w40 - if you intend to start car up during fall/winter at all.

It also more or less fits normal oil change schedule for an actively abused car - twice an year.

This is a track only car. We will replace oil every other track weekend. In texas, we dont usually get cold temps at the track until Dec, so we will have flushed it by then.
