Your editted story is pretty close to my experience - like OP initially I was afraid not to heat treat due to claims of shortened tire life, etc. When I finally tried untreated, I couldn't tell the difference and tire life was the same, as I said earlier.

Moving on to some other thread this is entertaining but...
