Thank you! Most useful Rennlist post so far for 2010!

The student just froze in a supercharged 997? It's stories like that which make me think I should not go down the instructor road.

So how long would those tires hold up if he drove flat out?

Thanks for this weeks sig line!

That's funny! We all have to start somewhere. Good to see that he stuck with it. Who knows, 6 years from now he might be an instructor that gets jabbed by his fellow instructors about tires and H.H. now and then.

I told my first instructor the tires were good and should last all weekend as they had nice deep treads on them. They were Falkens, something like 10 years year old and had the consistency of baklite.

Every driver has to start at point zero. Most regions have a novice program and for many regions it's mandatory. Some novice are fortunate to actually dive on wet skid pads and use slide cars at tracks like Mid-Ohio and similar before venturing out on a road course.

Until you've actually participated in track driving you really have no understanding of what is involved so I think we should cultivate not humiliate.

Seriously......unless they are being a douche

And it sounds like they did cultivate but we can always humiliate afterwards.....

It's a wee bit uncool to go around trashing your student simply because he was trying to be cautious about a safety issue. If he was a jerk and a-hole, sure fire away. But come on, you're violating one of the unwritten rules of instructing: don't trash a student for what they DON'T yet know. That's why they're called students, ya know.

Does this mean we aren't going to show that video during orientation?

Chris, looks like you missed this thread that alludes to the Dunning-Kruger effect. It's very amusing:

For us new Porsche owner's...I can certainly say I dream of the day I can safely open her up and see what she can do...but until then...I will humbly admit that my driving skills are far below that required to handle the 911 turbo "flat-out" on a track. So although I can appreciate this person's enthusiasm...the false-reality is a little bit funny. I am sure one day he will laugh at himself about his first day. Hopefully I can make the next DE @ Road Atlanta...maybe we'll all be laughing about it by then.

Just don't question your tires' abilities in the tech line!
Definitely sign up for a DE or if you don't want to start out with your own car go to PSDS (I've done 7 days there). And HH gave ME some pointers. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Hmmm...

Sounds like it was handled well to me. The vast divide between humility and humiliation is strewn with the refuse of cars like his. Best that he suffer potential humiliation and drive home in his car than ride home in a roll back.

As much as I would love to own and drive a GT3 RS at my local track, I think my '97 993C2 is a fantastic car for me to be learning on. It is not a slow car, but it will not bite me too hard when I make mistakes in it (don't get me wrong, it can still bite me ... just not as hard as some of these more powerful cars). If someone can afford a supercharged 997, they should be able to afford a less powerful car to learn on. Let's hope this is not a case of more money than brains. Let's hope this driver learned a few things this weekend at Road Atlanta and builds upon what they learned.
