Default lexan vs glass windshield - 996 cup

Any advice on lexan vs. glass for windshield in a 996 cup? I'm repairing two cracks in mine, so I should start thinking about replacing it in the future. Any ideas of cost, or quality of aftermarket glass? I do have a thick tearoff on the glass now.

Thanks!
David

David I replaced my glass with Lexan from www.fivestarbodies.com and we run a two layer tear off to protect it.

Hey Keith! How've you been? Are you making the trip down to Sebring again? What made you go the route of lexan over glass, and does it have to be supported? Mine had a very thick tearoff on it when the rock(s) hit, so I'd be curious as to how big they could have been.

Thumbs up

HI David, Andy, Al and I will do Sebring again next year. Brian is going to meet us at Road America for the Sept. race , you should try to make it if you can. It does not take much to crack the windshield. if the car in front of you hits a stone, nut or bolt at 100+mph its going to crack. All of us changed to Lexan, we got tired of replacing the glass every season. We cracked a glass windshield at VIR last year and couldn't find a replacement in the four surrounding states. We called Five Star Bodies and they sent one to the track over night and it saved the weekend. we have not put in any additional supports and only notice a slight flexing at 135+ mph. I highly recommend it.

+2 on polycarbonite. 1/4" doesn't require additional support and less weight is always a good thing. I use Shields:

Glass windows in a GT3 cup will break too often, get the thick plexi.

one more for 1/4" Lexan but dont just get any type. I used Speedglass which is... "GE LEXAN with a proprietary coating that is applied to both sides of the window after it has been molded. This coating provides a very thin outer "sheel" that is virtually as hard as glass. Underneath the coating "shell" is "HO"(High Optics) LEXAN polycarbonate, which is very soft and somewhat flexible."

Its not wire brush proof but its seen its share of rocks/crap and doesn't have a scratch on it.

I use the same. Got the anti-water treatment on the outside and the anti-fog on the inside.

The fit was excellent and virtually no trimming was needed. This is important as install costs can go up quickly if the fit from the factory is not correct.

After one season I probably have a little more pitting than I had hoped but its only something I notice when cleaning the windshield, clarity is still excellent from the cockpit.

another happy shields user. Outside coating is great. Does not scratch like uncoated plastic and cleans up well. Stickers on the coated side act like rain-X was used. +1 on fitting. I had them ship finished but not cut to size as the instal was not going to be standard. Fitting one is not hard but is time consuming.

Digging up an old thread, bought a 996 full aero kit and hard back seats on Friday, thinking of replacing the glass windshield with lexan, will use the car for a few DE's and track days so the weight savings will be nice, already has fabspeed sport headers and exhaust. Anyways this is now my daily driver as well, replaced my Cayenne Turbo, will the Lexan work in Michigan weather year round, rain, snow, 100 degree temps on days in summer down to -10 degree's in winter?

Keep the glass. It was get too scratched up from street use in inclement weather. Wipers will destroy it....
