Any updates to this thread? I'm changing the oil tomorrow on my little HPDE/Club racer 944. Would like to buy the "right stuff". I DO have some left over Rotella T 15W40 from my diesel truck days... Hmmm....

The Rotella 15W40 is THE oil recommended for my son's Subaru WRX and a lot of Porsche "TT" guys use it as well for their daily drivers.
As far as my SP2 car goes, i'm pretty happy with Redline 40W, although everyone has their own favorite brand !

You should use the oil recommended for the car. since my engine is basically 1/2 of the 944 engine, i wouldn't think that anything other than a 20-50 or 15-50 should be used on the track, especially because of the engine's reputation of being starved of oil for its #2 bearing in high g turns, especially with oil that breaks down easily or too light of viscosity weight. what ever is in the Porsche book, use that oil for this car. but, dont use mobil 1, as it breaks down and thins out to the point that it endangers oil pressure overall. motul, redline, amsoil, rotella, all shoulld be fine

Several PacNW 944 racers run switched to Luqui Moly 10W60 from brad Penn 20W50. We all saw close to 10 degree lower oil temps.

Just because you see lower temps, doesn't mean its better. If the flow is restricted, this means that more heat can be left in the engine and not being dissipated through the oil. plus, 10 degrees is a substantial decrease. I think anyone would be suspicious of such a change in temp levels of the oil, on a given day by multiple drivers, with same lap times on a same temp day, due to a 10 weight change in oil viscosity ratings. i mean, folks dont even see a full 10 degree change in using an oil cooler vs no oil cooler in a fairly controlled environment.
did you notice any changes in oil pressure?
