Did I misunderstand something?

"A true spec car, built the way I would do it would cost between $40-50K complete..."

As far as building rather than buying, yes it's cheaper in theory to buy, but there is without question enjoyment in building. And... you know better what's in the car. I built my Spec996, and I'm glad I did. I'd probably build again.

It will cost you about $10k-$12k more than a SpecBarbie.

Is that cost in the increased donor car cost and the additional aero parts on a spec996? I would have thought that a spec996 would cost more than that...

That's how I read it also. For Rick to build a "true" Spec Boxster it would cost between $40 and $50K. I assumed he meant built to the extent of the rules, maybe a new engine?

There are not that many additional parts other than the more expensive shock package, and the wing if you want to run it.

Hi Greg,

The list that Himself posted is one of my old ones. But the pricing is still about right for the home builder. If you can do most of the work yourself, it will be between $14K and $16K in parts, which includes a stick built cage. That does not include the cost of the donor.

The build itself is fun and can be done in your home garage. I sent the cage work out to TC Design who fab'd up a great cage. Myself and some friends put together the car and the car came out beautiful.

Donor costs are $5K to $12K but we've found several nice donors in the $8K to $10K range recently. My car is a 1997 and has over 8K track miles on it since 2006. I have not installed the IMS update nor the accusump but I also don't run high banked courses. I run mostly Infineon, Sears, Thunderhill and Buttonwillow.

So far it's been an absolute wonderful car to race.

Whoa, considering I have all of that, including a super sweet cage and one of the lightest custom roofs around, in a winning car, I guess I owe somebody about $25K

I think Tim's point is someone can build a spec boxster themselves for about $25k. The OP stated he was thinking of doing the build himself and was looking for the cost of parts.

I think Tim's apple is closer to what the OP wants rather than Rick's apple.

I did some of the work like gutting it out. I was just saying that someone looking to get into this series shouldn't expect to pay over $40k by a y means. The series was supposed to be economical. Don't get me wrong Rick, I very happy for you if you're getting that kind of money to build one. Besides it keeps the value of mine up.

Thanks, I was just curious. Not buying anything unless someone walks up to me with a wad of cash for my car and I don't see that happening anytime soon..

Gary,
Do you want the Spec Boxster with the models or without?

Scott
