learn me here.....was there an actual improper steering technique? or just a bad line? it seems to me he basically ran out of runoff and was slow on the steering correction
kinda like what i did last year when i was learning gingerman. 3:20

In my opinion, that was ALL shuffle steering issue. when you grab the wheel like that, you loose a sence of return-center. also, your hands are not in a position to do quick corrections. that line was fine. Ive had MUCH greater wiggles on that exit with no issues because, my input is at a value and rate that matches the return of the rear of the car. (think of the tail of the car tied to the steering wheel by strings, like a string puppet. you want the "strings" tight all the time)
Anyway, I have been with a lot of students that start out that way, and are getting the ugly tail slide recoveries, and then with the hands at 9-3 or there abouts, their issues go away.
It works on the snow where things happen much slower, and the steering inputs can be much greater, or in autoX for the same reasons, but in this case, to me, its all about the hands having no idea were they are going or where they have been.

no, yours was a 2 wheel on the slippery birm that caugth you by surprise. a big difference from the video i posted. A slight overcorrection caused that due to the rear just stepping out. However, had you not been surprised and had the hands nailed where they were from the start, there wouldnt have been the tank slapper.

So THAT'S what you guys mean when you say shuffle steer. To me, that's not shuffle steering, though I guess its the technical definition. Thats steering like you are going around a corner with your buick before church.
Unless its a very tight turn, you should be able to keep your hands in the same place on the wheel.

I need a little clarification, too: I recall reading about someone getting chastised at a DE for "crossing his arms" on a tight corner. I've always just left my hands at 9 and 3 on the wheel, up until the point where it's about 180 degrees turned in either direction. If I ever get to a PCA day, will they call me on this, and, if so, why?

This is still my favorite from that thread. Forget shuffle steering - just drive with one hand on the wheel
