This is the lightest enclosed that I've ever heard about, Trailex 80180:

http://www.trailex.com/CTE-80180.cfm

According to their website, total GVW is 7K, and cargo capacity is 4.7K, so if my math is right, the trailer should weigh around 2.3K. This is almost half of an empty steel enclosed, and a bit more than steel flatbed. Not cheap though.

Did you see my PM?

Tony, the 80180 non HD weighs in at 1300# empty. Pretty darn light.

Hey Andy. There's not a lot of good used aluminum trailers out there this Spring (at least so far as I could see). So, I just purchased a new open aluminum trailer at Performance Trailers in Flanders, NJ. Nice folks down there. Feel free to call me it you care to discuss. (914) 548-5084.

Maybe see you at LRP (still undecided on Lime Rock club race this year). Your spbox looks great, BTW.

Is that published on their website? For some reason "Trailer Weight" and "Carry Capacity" are blank on this webpage:

http://www.trailex.com/enclosed_sports_car_trailers.cfm

I made calculation based upon info that pops up when you click "Trailer Dimensions".

Hi Andy
Keep in mind that its not just weight you have to be concerned with, but drag (windage).

Its not just the weight with the enclosed trailer, you are picking up a big increase in wind resistance. This will put a lot more strain on your motor.tranny/rear end.

I would disagree, having pulled the open and enclosed the enclosed always pulled better. And I mean easier behind a Cayenne, 1/2 ton Toyota Pickup, 1/2 ton chevy, Range Rover and a 1/2 ton escalade. We have several trailers now so no shortage of choices, we just use the transporters for the races these days. if I was still pulling to the races myself. The aluminum enclosed is a no brainer, garage, hideout from rain, more secure, advantages go on and on. I had a fully loaded 24' foot enclosed also and would still pick the light alum enclosed. Just my experience, and I have had alot....

Hi Glen,

In your opinion, what size is too small for an enclosed trailer? I need to keep it light and cheap, so I want to go as small and simple as possible.

Thanks,

Andy

If your Q7 has the towing package, like mine, the limit is 6,600lbs. I have pulled a 3,500lb enclosed trailer behind mine for a couple of years. It does OK, even with the 3.6, but mileage suffers, pulling in 5th gear. I am moving to a steel 7x18, lower profile trailer that is about 1,000 lbs lighter so I'm not pushing the towing limit so much. I have an escape door in the side, which is why I can get by with such a narrow trailer, but your car would probably need at least a 7.5' wide trailer to make it work. I have 80" between the walls, which fits my 944. It's hard (but not impossible), to get out without the escape door open on the side of the trailer. My new trailer will have about 15 SQ ft. less frontal area - hopefully that will help the mileage (drops into the single digits at times when I'm towing at 65+).

The longer wheelbase Q is a wonderfully stable tow rig, with great brakes!

Here's a PDF of their race trailer line. http://www.unxpres.com/Uploads/ProductLit/Lit_52.pdf I the UXT trailer, but in a 7' wide version. About 2,600lbs, under $6K (if you don't get carried away with the options). Again, the 7 foot width may not be for everyone, but I like it because I can see around it without add-on mirrors, and the aero drag is less. I fold in the mirrors on the 944 to comfortably fit through the opening .

The OP has probably got the Trailex 7031 version instead of the 7541. My Boxster is just slighty too wide for the 7031, but fits fine on my 7541.

Glen, interesting, my experience has been just the opposite of yours. My F250 diesel pulls a 2 car open steel trailer (which weighs a gawd awful amount plus the weight of two cars), much easier than a single car enclosed which weighs a lot less. The wind resistence seems to be the killer at least for me.

There is a big difference pulling an enclosed trailer (except for the low enclosed Trailex). The wind load is a lot more than an open trailer. You can pull it short distances, but the long hauls are going to be tough on the tranny in the Audi.
