Default Does an oil seep bother you?

Not the Valdez, mind you; but a seep out of your 911. Just enough out of the valve covers to "mist" the rear deck after a session (yet bone dry when driven on the street ...it's only under track duress, dangit!!).

My SC Trackmeister is a 95% track car (to be 100% unregistered later this year), but this little seep bugs me only because I know when I paddock, there is that oily film at the bumper/deck. What do you all think? What are your tolerance levels? Should I just stop thinking about it (yes, I have tried to address it twice, but am now thinking about no longer chasing this niggling "issue," if it even merits being called one)? TIA!

Out of your 911, no problem. Out of mine? I don't think so.

Running Turbo valve covers? Try the new silicone based gaskets, they seem to work well.

I ran with a steady drip that was mostly messy (front engine = oil deposited under the full length of the car), but even good oil at $8/quart was cheaper than a fix. I finally got the leaks fixed when the oil was soaking the header during cool-down, and creating a cloud during the first two laps of the next session. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

The repair will pay for itself at the point where I would have poured in my 350th quart of $8 oil.

What about if it all of a sudden gushes out on the track and you cause a couple of guys to wreck their cars? It starts small and then....

Change the gaskets and forget about it.

Me neither, for what it's worth. A VC gasket leak like you described probably wouldn't result in misting at the track. I don't think there should be that much pressure building up under the covers right?

Unfortunately, it would bother me too...

Probably time for a valve adjustment anyway. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

You will know for sure if that is the only place it is leaking afterwards.

I could not live with it either.

Any kind of seep would bother me. First, I'd be concerned about the seep getting bigger and the results while I'm driving the car which isn't good. Second, I'd worry about the seep getting bigger and depositing oil on the track or misting the guy's windshield behid me. Neither very cool. Fix it.

Well...

It's a 911, ya know? As long as it is not equipped with the all too common automatic oil change feature (never drain, just add), what's the question? I only take offense at an oil leak if I have been trying to solve it. Otherwise... oil's cheap, and it keeps the undercarriage from corroding.

You guys are crazy to accept a car that leaks oil enough to put a film on the rear end of a car. You are creating a dangerous situation beacuse you are too cheap to fix the problem. As one who's been a victim of a car in front leaking fluids, I can tell you that WE, other drivers, don't appreciate it.

PCA DE tech inspection does not allow a car to pass that is leaking, and PCA Scrutineering will not allow a car with leaking fluids to participate in a race weekend event until it has been fixed.

I only take offense at an oil leak if I have been trying to solve it. Otherwise... oil's cheap, and it keeps the undercarriage from corroding.
That is one of the stupidest things I've heard yet!

Fix your stupid car so you don't put others at risk!

The oil seep may not bother you, but it certainly will bother the driver in the car on your bumper. It's sloppy and dangerous to run a car at the track with an oil leak.
