Nomex is not allowed in karting, only Cordura (Level 2) or equivalent, for abrasion resistance.
I wonder if they simply allowed him to wear his regular suit or if he had a Level 2 Cordura suit made to look like his regular suit?
Regular suits were allowed. Heylen was wearing his TDi cup suit.

Just about everybody in the "pro" race (Indy car, F1, Sprint Cup, etc) was wearing their regular driving suit. The guys that are current karters had the 'proper' gear on.

Yikes...
Then again, the CIK no longer requires Sr class competitors to wear a foam neck collar or a neck brace.

Yep, not a one that I remember seeing used in the finals and there were some pretty solid hits. May have been one or two as I wasn't looking for them though.

There is a fairly active post currently on ekartingnews regarding the thinnest possible foam collar available. All kinds of tricks (most illegal) to modify this to make it completely useless, but simply to be able to say "I'm wearing a foam collar" for those series who still require it in certain classes.

If you think H&N restraint "discussions" are interesting here, just attempt one in a karting community.
