Default IMIS Motorsports Show -- Indy

Just returning back from a week in Indy at the IMIS show where Swift had a booth to show our latest racecar to the American racing public. The first time this car has been displayed in the states.

We built up a fairly complete car with engine to display. One side without bodywork, the other side with.

We received many many compliments on the car as well as our booth. Up to this point, Swift had never displayed at a racing tradeshow.

Here are some images

I know Robin Miller a little from the racetracks I spend time at and hooked up our president with an interview on Speed -- air's Sunday on the Speed Report

How was the show? Compared to PRI?

Bummer I wasn't there to see the car. I really have liked this from day one.

I see a turbine wheel peeking out of that gearbox, are you running Garrett turbos?

The show went well, very well attended, much more than anticipated being a first year deal. Chris Paulsen told me they turned away 75 exhibitors simply due to the lack of room. Next year they propose a 1000 vendors!

The car is headed to PRI now as we'll display it in the PFC booth next week.

PRI typically is good for us, especially the first two days from a visitor perspective, we've never displayed there.

Hi Cory

For the Cosworth Engine installs, Garrett was the choice. For Honda, IHI turbos were specified. Each engine company specified their own type. This gbx we had on display was from the good ole' days of 90's Indycar, then labelled Champ Car. Over 900hp from 2.65 liters

Chris, that is a very nice display. I wish I could have been there in person to see it. I will make sure to watch Speed TV for the interview.

Regarding that turbo location (sort of tucked "inside" the gearbox), it looks like the gearbox and/or rear dampers would be exposed to a tremendous amount of heat. How do you prevent these components from getting overheated?

Yes, having the turbo located there was really the only place to put it, having to be as close as possible to the headers. Six different chassis makers back then did the same thing. Its a bitch to keep things cool, but thermal and inconel blankets made it manageable. We also had to plumb fuel and oil to the turbo as well as a throttle cable, so this was another challenge. This is why we called the turbo as having a hot side, and a F'ing hot side

typical hot side output pipe

Chris, thanks for the additional info and pictures. Talk about some really complex "packaging" that had to be done!!

In your reply, you mentioned routing oil, fuel and a throttle cable TO the turbo. I can understand why oil needs to be routed to the turbo center section . . . but I have never heard of fuel and a throttle cable being routed TO the turbo. I am reading this right?

We had four fuel injectors mounted at the compressor inlet that we injected fuel (methanol) -- since intercoolers werent allowed, this was what was done -- also gave the engine overrun, kept the turbo speed up. we also had a four bladed throttle valve at the inlet of the turbo as well. I will look for a image of that one. It was called an IGV valve. Trick bit of kit it was!!
