Weight due to materials.
Personally, I've never understood the issue of reducing the weight since it is held down quite firmly by the belts (and hopefully stays there), so the contact pressure is far in excess of the device weight....in other words, it is not 'unsprung mass' on the neck like a helmet.
And BTW.... 5W-50 and a F350 dually (inside forum joke)

I have the sport and love it. Like the previous poster said, the actual weight of the Hans has almost nothing to do with the pressure you feel. Your belts cinched over the Hans applies the pressure.
Unless the cool look of Carbon Fiber is worth the extra money to you...

That's a common problem with 3" wide belts (it's apparently meant for 2" belts), and I believe it applies to all HANS models.
