Unless you had a real flat HP curve, then the spacing would only have to be the width of the max hp breadth. Some V8s with lots of torque, have these kind of curves and only need 3 gears on most tracks, and adding another one might not provide any gains. The Audi diesel was a good example of this. very wide useable HP curve.

If you step down through the gears one at a time, you won't find yourself at such a loss at turn entry. On a modern street car transmission, only 3rd - 6th are usually able to be used on track anyway. 1st and 2nd are too low for track use. With 5-6 usable gears in a proper race transmission, the performance benefits are significant.
