Default heel & toe and turbos

i drive a 996 turbo and at a recent PCA DE event, my instructor (who also drove a 996 turbo) suggested that heel & toe was unnecessary for turbos and he does not do it with his turbo on the track.

do you subscribe to this and for those of you who drive turbos do you heel and toe?

i would like to be able to recount his reasoning but i know i didn't follow it then and can't possibly do any justice to it here, mostly because my knowledge is limited and i have a lot to learn.

i've done a fair amount of looking around for confirmation on this subject, here and elsewhere, haven't had any luck. plenty on heel and toe alone though. there seem to be a good number of instructors here, hoping i can learn something.

your thoughts much appreciated. many thanks.

I do not see any reason why heal and toe would be unnecessary for a turbo. Turbo or NA, smooth braking and matching revs is important.

I also track a 996 turbo and I think it is necessary for transaxle longevity as is smooth upshifting.

Just for tranny and clutch longevity I'd keep heel and toeing. What was his reasoning behind that statement?

I think your instructor will be taking his turbo to the transmission shop before too long if he doesn't heel/toe. If I were you, I'd ignore what he told you. The turbo is like any other manual transmission car and should be heel/toed.

+ another 1000. I bet he doesn't heal and toe because he CAN'T heal and toe... that's pretty much the only reason not to.

Took a Panoz racing school to fast track getting my SCCA license about 9 years ago. One of the guys at the school was there so he could get a license to run Ferrari Challenge. He refused to learn heel and toe at the school because he said he would never need to know how in order to drive the paddle shift Ferrari's. He was the guy wearing his Ferrari red fire suit to breakfast every morning and to dinner at night...he was also the guy that I lapped twice during our 20 minute "fun race" at the end of the school.

I would have mentioned that to the CTI. It isn't anything dangerous that he is teaching, but he should not be telling people that. It's pretty damn wrong lol.

actually another benefit is keeping those hairdryers lit up. Something I learned a lot from in looking at champ car data.

I really can't think of any reason to say that it is 'unnecessary' in any type of manual car. Just trying to find some logic in it- is it possible he didn't want you using heel and toe on the track yet? I will hold a low time student back on heel and toe excersizes on track if it is a distraction or the car becomes unstable while trying to learn the skill. Try to learn at stop lights, improve on the street, and then apply on the track.
