I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions and observations - I decided on the iPhone (but definitely not in pink). Partly based on coverage area, but mostly on the # of apps available, even though I'm not sure which if any I will use.
Amazing how popular these things are; sold out locally as soon as they arrive in the stores (except in white shells, which is almost as bad as pink). Online is an easier buy anyway.
