Everyone learns differently.

Snow is great.

Autocrossing is great.

Reading Speed Secrets is very great.

The hardest thing to do, though, is translate what you did in the snow or autocrossing at 15 to 30 MPH to turn 1 at Mid-Ohio or Watkins Glen at 80 - 100 MPH.

You need an intermediate step. You need to go out and find a corner at your favorite track that is relatively safe to overdrive and induce the slide. Something where the track is wide and you would have a hard time actually going off track. Something around 40 - 60 MPH. Get the car out of shape and recover.

I like turn 9 at Mid-O for that. You can even use the curbing on the inside of the corner to induce the slide.

It definitely depends on the region and site, but those are typical autocross speeds around here. Last weekend I was topping out third gear in the STi (~75mph) at two points on the course, and only had to drop to second gear (<40mph) at two other points on the course. That course was faster than normal, but it's not unusual for me to top out 2nd gear (~60mph) in the Porsche at least once on a "normal" course.

Any other way to improve car control skills?.........

Drive on a track that you know well...

when it's wet !!!

Worn out track tires. Try to get your times close to what you have with good tires. You'll learn a lot.

Turns one thru eight at Putnam Park build confidence. But nine and ten will punish for bad manners. This is a great facility for learning.

Autocross.

Don't worry so much about times just focus on tossing the car and catching it. The risk involved with failure are pretty low so go for it.

autocross is a good way to learn but man... 6 one-two-minute-ish runs for an entire day!

i have yet to find a club in my area that does this. if there was one, i'm there.

So far I believe that in an ideal world the most beneficial and best bung for the buck/time for me would be:

1. A very wet skid pad with my racecar on worn out hoosiers...... once I feel comfortable there

2. Catch a rainy day on R6s at a track like T-bolt where there isn't too much to hit.......

3. Hire a professional racing coach (as soon as I hit the lottery)......

4. Join a karting league in the off-season.......

5. Keep on residing in the Boston area where snowy winters are pleintful.....

Autocross I tried once, but it is like golf, it takes forever........

I thank you all for your kind inputs.......

pro coach or take off your downforce items and go to smaller width tires with the same power. that will make you a man.

Autocross in the rain. It was great fun and we got LOTS of runs in w/ the low turn-out. Best $30 entry fee I ever spent!
