Default 915 Transmission Oil & Change DIY Help

I'm going to change the oil in my 915 tranny for the first time.

What oil? Brand/Type/Weight.

Anyone have links to DIY articles or step by step instructions. Pix always help.

Tools/pumps needed?

TIA

Pelican forum is a better place to learn about this. Do a search over there and you'll find reams of info for what's a relatively simple (but messy) job.

Good luck.

That crossed my mind. I don't hang out over there so this is the logical forum.

Thanks, I'll go looking around.

Swepco 201. A pump works best, you will need a gallon. First get the fill plug out of the side (because if you can't get it out you don't want to find out after you drain it). Drain the oil out the bottom plug, replace the plug, pump in fresh 201 until it comes back out the fill hole (car needs to be level). Put the fill plug in, your done.

thanks Gary. I thought you'd show up with the answer sooner or later.

I am going to change every fluid (If I could only find the radiator) and check everything. Not much droving these days so I might as well renew whatever looks like it has been a while since it was changed/checked.

Any suggestions?

Gary is spot on. You'll notice a difference right away if it didn't have the Swepco.

Flush the brake fluid, engine oil if its been sitting all winter/summer (run it until the oil is hot and in front radiator 1st). You can lube up cables, all pivot points, pedal cluster, and anything else that can bind up! Also check to be sure your clutch has free play (lock-bolt on the tranny).

should i change the tranny plugs or reuse the old ones.

i have been on track once, early June, since VIR last fall. Had the car checked out and nut and bolted by J3. this time i'm going a little deeper than oil and brake fluid. Doing an August event at RA.

I remember how smooth my G50 tranny shifted after the oil was changed. New Swepco.

Any thoughts on Swepco 210? I saw that recommended somewhere for track/race use.

Just a consideration..... You may want to search the 911 forums for some opinions from Peter Zimmerman. He has a *ton* of history working on these boxes and his recommendation is NOT the Swepco solution.

Never heard of it but that doesn't mean anything... 210 is 80W140 vs 201 at 80W90. I would think 210 may be too heavy for a 915?

Two more questions.

1) Does the trans have to be warm? My car has been on jack stands since yesterday and I don't want to take it down until I change the trams oil.

2) What is the torque spec for the drain and filler plugs?

TIA

Cold is normal. Bentley Manual says 18 ft/lb 24nm.
