Default Cheap cheap. Looking for an rv/tow vehicle.

http://columbus.craigslist.org/rvs/1224536441.html

I'm looking for an inexpensive way to tow my 951 on an open trailer. Yes, I know it's not a 10 liter twin turbo diesel pusher. All I need to tow is about 5,000 lbs, and this could double as a family adventuremobile. I have a good welder/fabricator in the family who could beef up the frame and hitch as needed.

All that said, do you guys think this would be relatively safe to tow my car to DE's in Ohio/Indiana (ie. not very hilly country). I like this one because it seems to have a lot of motor compared to the size of the cabin (7.5L for 22ft RV), so it might have a bit of capacity left in the GVWR.

Thanks!

I had the same idea, towing an open trailer with a small motorhome. You should be able to tow what you are proposing without any difficulty (assuming your trailer has brakes) although I suspect steep hills might be a problem. Be sure to check the brakes on the vehicle and if it already come with a hitch and brake controller than it sounds great.

Giacomo, thanks for the feedback. Yes, I would definitely use a trailer with brakes.

From what I've read in my searches on here, the allowable tongue weight is usually a bit low on the Class C rv's. But, with the relatively short rear overhang of this one (again, it's only 22 ft. long), and with some extra steel reinforcements going from frame to hitch, maybe it would help that issue.

How much tongue weight do you think you will be placing, 10% to 15% of total trailer weight? I suspect 500 to 750 lbs is allowable. If not, have you ever checked out one of those trailer toads? They add 2' to the trailer but removes all the tongue weight, although I've never seen one in action.

If you go ahead with this purchase please let us know how it tows. I'd like to get the same kind of setup.

The trailer toad is interesting. Wonder what it's like to back up with one of those...

I will let you know how it does if I go this route...

Gone?
I didn't see the picture, but the issue I see with most motorhomes is the length of the body behind the rear wheels, it puts a huge lever on the frame, which is why the load capacity is so low. There's a company that makes a mini toter that attaches to the hitch, and it has two wheels to carry the tongue weight. You might want to look into something like that if you go the motorhome route.

Yeah, looks like it's gone already. Probably one of you guys! J/k.

Well, that's a good point about the rear overhang. Yet another benefit of the one that was for sale... I think its shorter length would have meant less rear overhang. Oh well... there will be others, I hope.

There can be only one proper use for that:

One of their better episodes IMHO, hysterically funny.

For several years I towed with a decommissioned school "short bus"... It was yellow, had flashing lights, and a nice diesel - it was a Ford E350 underneath. I took out all the seats which gave me great space, too.

Best part, it was $800. I put a little money into it over the years, then sold it for $750 to some young hippies who wanted to convert it to WVO and drive cross-country.

I always wanted to get a banner for it that said: Special-Ed Racing

Van, if this was going to be purely a tow vehicle, I'd be all over the short bus. That's gotta be the cheapest way to get a diesel. However, we don't want to get made fun of by others at the campground! Seriously, I don't think a bus would work as well for the fam as a camper.
