Default Opinions on this trailer (24 ft Enclosed)

Guys,
I have been keeping a look out for a value priced 24' trailer. I have the tow vehicle for it (8.0L 2500 Dodge). Right now I have an open trailer.

My goals are as follows.

1) value priced - I have seen new trailer going for $6500 that meet my minimum criteria, but would like to spend less. This not a "must have" item so price is key. I figure bad economy may be a good deal on a trailer.
here is an example of local new http://www.trailersplus.com/TrailerL...pe=ILRDCC24TA3

2) 24' feet long with 5k axles. I don't want shorter since I don't want to feel pressed for space and 3.5k axles seems to little to haul the trailer, car and all the crap that I would want to put in a 24 footer.

3) Long term goal is a trailer with enough space for spares, tools, wire for electric and may even A/C. I would do most of this myself vs paying 5k for it up front.

Given that ... Opinions on this trailer.

Note this trailer just got 1 bid a 4k and just renewed its auction. Seems decient except I worry about age and condition. I am too far to just check it out.

Seems pretty rough to me. I just sold my 24' for $5500. '99 or 2000 model. Diamond plate, E-Track, electric jack, Buffalo ramps, really nice cabinets, tire rack.

It was probably under-priced as it sold in ~24 hours. But, I think you can do better.

Yep, It seems all the "value priced" trailers on in the mid west or east coast. The issue is the time to drag one home from your neck of the woods easly eats up the savings. Trailers like yours tend to go to go for 8-10k in this area. While I would love that trailer 8k is just too much. It is not that I NEED a trailer so hard to justify a trailer that costs more than my race car.

I am looking for a trailer in the same size range. I'd keep looking instead of picking that one up. I've found 24 foot featherlites at 10K and brand new lower end Pace at 5K. 4K for that seems a bit high right now. I'd just keep watching Craigslist for one to pop up. There are a fair amount in the Phoenix area.

Nice find. Price is great considering the A/C. Only drawback is 20ft and set-up for bikes. Now sure if 14ft car will fit. Might need to make some calls. Ideally 20ft is short, but with all the upgrades it may be ok as I have a shell on truck I use carry spares now.

Thanks for the tip on craigslist. I had looked before, but probalby too narrow on seach critera to get anything. Now I have seen a bunch of 20 footers. Still 20ft is not ideal, but there are some options.

Thanks

Do not go for a 20ft, you will be unhappy. I just bought a 22 and wish I had two more feet of space already.

Yeah,
It is a concern. 24's are not so easy.

Looking at Phx Craig's list

There are 15 20 foot trailers for sale. Prices are $4000 to $7800 and there are some nice ones sub 6k

At 24 feet thing change.
There are 11 for sale.
two used ones under 4k, but questionable condition and one basic one at $6500.
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/rvs/1157514386.html
and
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/rvs/1190118893.html

They might be worth looking at.

At 26 to 28 feet there are some. One is at 5k, but looks dated despite the 2005 vintage?
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/rvs/1188201394.html

And the next one is at 7k and 28 feet.

All the rest are 8k to 10k

I usually do the following serach on Clist

Pace trailer
Haulmark trailer
ATC
Featherlite
Race trailer (around here and Charlotte a decent number of hits.)
every once in a while I do enclosed trailer to see if there's anything I missed.

If you had a 24 you'd wish it was a 28 etc. I've never heard anyone say they had a big enough trailer they are always wishing for two more feet.

Yes a 24 is better for sure though.

I am in the process of cleaning up my old trailer to sell.

24' TimberWolf trailer. Has a walk on roof and an 18' awning. Silver in color and a white interior. A few bumps and scratches, but overall in nice shape. It is either a 2004 or 2005 model. It could use a brake service, but I have the parts to do the job that would go with the trailer.

It has the 3500lb axles instead of the 5000. (7k not 10k).

I do not get up to anwhere near the 10k (car and trailer is about 5500lbs, so 1500 of other stuff is fine) in my opinion the 5k axles add weight and cost that you do not need.

I bought a new trailer at a budget and I am not as happy with the new trailer as the old trailer. In my opinion I took a step down in quality. The new trailer has more surface rust on the chassis than the old one does already and we are talking a few months. I plan on taking the new trailer over to get it re-undercoated. So, be carefull of the 'bargin' new trailers.

That said, my used one with an awning and walk on roof is avaliable at $5200. It has a battery and a winch that I planned on moving to the new trailer, but if you are interested I can leave it in the old one. It works great for pulling the trailer in.

Sounds nice for 5200, but two issues,

1) Ohio - vs Arizona. Long tow between them eats up an value

2) 7k vs 10k. My take is this. 3500lbs for the bare trailer. + 2500lbs for the car. = 6000lbs. So add in a few racks and bench and that is easly 200lbs. Then consider 2 or 3 sets of tires. Figure 160lbs per set and that is just shy of 500lbs. THen figure in a 150lbs transmission, 150lbs of tools. Weights for my cannopy at 200lbs more. Then spares.

So at 20 ft I might be ok at 7k max since I have less room for junk. At 24 feet I am more lilkely to cram crap in there so really want the bigger axles to prevent over loading. My truck will is rated for 9990 on a ball hitch so it just makes sense to have more capacity.

Now I am not saying you overloaded yours, but I know how I travel and I will be taking alot crap.

I hear you.

mostly just throwing out experiences. Never thought you might be interested in mine.

My math is a little different (but not much) There is one factor I will add.

2400 for the car

3300 for the trailer

2 sets of wheels and tires 320

I carry a lot of stuff and spares, so I would say this is about 750 lbs.

The awning I would put at more like 80lbs, but I have never had it off.

So, my total is at 6850.

Now, subtract from that the tonuge weight. The car is positioned to have the tonuge take 10% of the load, or about 680lbs, so subtracting this from the total is 6170 on the axles. That gives me about 1300lbs of safety. I know that will never have the 1300lbs more than I carry now.

My experience is that the lighter axles tow better.

My truck is a 3/4 ton avalanche with an 8.1L with (I believe) a 13k towing capasity. Everything tows like a dream with that thing.

Thanks

Ed

Well after much looking here are my goals

Length 24-26 Feet (worred that 28 will be too long and harder to manage and feel 20 Will be too short)
GVWR = 10k
Price 5500 for unfinished wood interior, 6000 for finished walls
Condition good to excellent. (good thing is rust is rare here. I have a 22 year old open steel trailer with no rust)

Tall order I am sure.

Anyone know how a Carson Trojan tows cars?

This trailer is in the size/price range/condition range, but not sure if the "light" trailer is good for cars even with 10k rating. Are they weak?
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/rvs/1188201394.html

Here is info on the carson trojan

Thanks for the input guys!
