Default Slicks for 993 cup

I looked on the Bob Woodman website for Yoko slicks and the sizes that fit my 993 cup are 230/650-18 front and 280/650-18 rear. However, Yoko has a notice listed that the 280/650-18 is meant to be run as a front tire and will not take the load when run as a rear tire on banked tracks. If run on the rear on non-banked tracks they recommend an increase of 1 to 2 lbs pressure.

Has anyone here used the 280/650-18 on the rear of a 993 cup or any 993 for that matter and what has been your experience?

A couple 993 Cup cars I know of do run the 280s on the rear on non-banked tracks with no issues at all...and I know of at least one that has run the 280 rears at Daytona. I would think you are safe on non-banked as directed.

Got a 993 Cup, huh?

Also, I have run the Yoks with no issues on non-banked tracks as well.

Default Slicks ofr 993 cup

Hi Rob. Actually the car is my brother's who is a Colonel in Iraq and is due home in about 30 days. He wrote to me with a list of things to do to get the car ready for him. His wife is not so good at this kind of stuff.

You may want to look into the Hoosier slicks (not R6 DOT slicks). The Yoks are what many run on the 993 Cup, but they have a soft sidewall and you have to adapt your driving style to that tire.

Thanks Geoffrey. The Yoko pricing is especially attractive. However, with the warning I referenced in my post, it concerns me particulary after reading/seeing about the carnage at the Glen this past weekend even though the tires were Michelins.

There has to be a reason why the manufacturer is recommending not to use the 285/650-18 on the rears.

Yes there is, the tire is designed as a front tire for a prototype car, and not for the rear of a heavy rear engine car

Geoffrey, do you have any experience or knowledge of using Pirellis (in lieu of Yoko or Hoosier slicks)? Of the three manufacturers (Yoko, Hooiser, Pirelli), what would your recommendation be? Or perhaps I should ask, do you run any one of these tire manufacturers on your car?

I have used the Pirellis in the past. They are an OK tire, but slower than the Michelins. The Pirellis seem to be out of stock quite often, but then the Michelins are not being made any longer. Tough choices out there for a 993.
