Default Adding a second oil cooler to a 944 S2?

I have been thinking of adding a second cooler to my 944 S2. I was going to make it easy on myself and get one of those KISS coolers, but I contacted Terry who makes them and he said it required some cutting of the lines and adding fitting and what not. While I am handy enough to do that type of thing (added a 951 cooler to my n/a...a lot of unnecessary work) I'd rather as close to a plug and play as possible. What have you done to add extra cooling to your S2?

Steve,

Do you have a good cooling duct going to your existing oil cooler? The reason that I ask is that I am not having any issues running one cooler with my 968 engine, even here in the deep south!

It's all stock. I recall getting near 250 last season. I recall that's the magic number where to back off... I can't recall how close it was though.

Last year I often ran with the oil temp in the 245-250 range, this year I installed a better cooling duct and temps have been around 235 to 240 but I have not yet run it on a really hot day. Will see how it works in the heat fairly soon I'm guessing.

Steve-
It was good to finally meet you yesterday...
I have never had any problems with my oil temps. Maybe my lip spoiler helps push air up near the cooler???

There are a few ways to go about doing it. Do you still have the a/c condenser in the car? You can remove the stock cooler and go with one large front mounted cooler (infront of radiator). Some guys use 2nd gen RX7 cores which are a great fit in that area, otherwise the same can be done with a new Mocal or Seatrab core. You would have to do custom lines and fittings which is no big deal really.

FWIW - I am putting in a BIG one about 4" tall and 24"+ wide along the bottom of the nose. Should increase the overall oil supply by about 1 qt or so.

I'll get some photos as soon as it's installed.

Eddie, nice meetin you as well...

Jon, sure I can add one easily enough with custom lines, but my understanding is that the lines attache to the block differently than they do in an 8V or a Turbo. Something about o-rings. Anyone one for certain?

what type of cooler comes stock? Is it an air-air or is it mounted to the radiator like the 928 does?

I removed my radiator oil cooler to get both cooler oil and cooler water temps...I put a 19 row setrab oil cooler behind the passenger side fog light....with new custom lines

It's air-air up in the front of the car like a 911 or a 951. The 944 8V had a cooler in a coolant bath (read up on milkshake) so I added a 951 cooler as well with a sandwich plate under the filter housing. I could do that again, but it'd be a bit much. The S2 is mounted horizontally and is bigger than the 951....I have plenty of room on the other side for a second one if I can figure out an easy way to do the plumbing.

After a nice warm season, I'm still thinking about this. Still hitting around 250 on a hot day. Anyone have any additional data points? Someone sent me photos of how the S2 cooler is hooked up. Looks difficult to add another in series. Someone mentioned to me notching out the fender liner to give more airflow. (Apparently he did this on his turbo). Any thoughts?

You can buy another oil cooler and shroud and mount them - then just take the car to a local hydraulics shop and have them fab up some new hoses - they should be able to do it pretty quick once they order the fittings that'll work with the kit.

I bought a front mount Mocal oil cooler like in Terry's KISS kit. I wound up having custom lines made.
