from the safety POV, porsche argues it's safer to the the windows closed in case of an accident.

regarding extracting a person from a car, it's simple to break a window to get them out if need be. hell, emergency crews can cut off the roof.

i'd much rather use signals to indicate somebody should pass. both hands on the wheel and you eliminate all that wind noise and distraction

LOL.

Regarding the distraction. I've gotten so used to running with the window opened that I was offered to run with them up at this last event (in the pouring rain). Mid way through the session, as the rain slacked off, I put it back down since I'm more used to it. I don't find the noise distracting. 951s blowing black clouds and old 911 with their rich mixture I do.

Well I'm glad there's some debate about the whole thing! I ran the logic through my mind and came up with similar pro and con arguments.

Car at 140mph. Wall at 100-110mph. Glass at 80-90mph. Get the picture? Yes signaling is one of the main/popular reasons. Turn signals would not work as most nubbies end up turning on the windshield wipers or turn signals during their first track days. Takinging your hand off during the straight is probably helpful as most drivers have a death grip on the wheel and signaling a pass may actually help them. i have a routine where I automatically check mirrors, check gauges and flex fingers on the straights - it gives you a few seconds to collect yourslf as well.

Besides, while running with the windows closed you miss all the "signals' your car gives you that are mainly audible (tires complaining before they break loose,...........). Hearing your engine whether going up or down the gears is just plain sexy while racing (sorry DEing).

In truth, windows down is to make it easy for event organizers to steal Porsche Radios

One stupid [IMHO] restriction by many DE operations is to ban the use of window nets in race-prepared cars in the name of making point-bys more obvious. Now THAT makes no sense. Its easy to give a clear and visible point with most nets in place.
+1. I give a point-by just fine under racing conditions with my net up. It's all about effective communication.

Don't want any pictures of that. Those numbers = Dead, closed casket. Window up or down is chair aranging at 110 mph into a fixed surface.

To me it looks about 50/50 pro con to windows up down with the point by not considered. With the point by added in it is windows down. No confusing the arm and pointing direction. Blinkers can be missread or missused.

The reason Most DE's require the window to be down is to allow an unconscious driver to be extracted by the corner workers if the door won't open after a crash.
This is not the reason at all. The track rescue people carry tools to get into a car, and neither a GLASS or LEXAN window will slow them down. I did a fair amount of research at one point in time for PCA Club Racing, so my research came from 5-6 tracks in the NE which all said the same thing. Windows of any type are not an issue in gaining access to the inside of the car.

So in events with windows up rules, your stay to the right of the straight and turn on the left turn indicator to let the vehicle behind you know to pass on the left?

It is also easier for the driver to get out of the car through an open window.

Doors/latches frequently have issues after contact with hard things in a shunt.

I do not agree with using turn signals, and would not run in an event held that way. They are too slow to apply and process; a hand signal is much faster and clearer. We cannot even get drivers to let others by in a consistent manner when the line moves across the track to the next turn, what would a turn signal mean in that situation? And how consistent would it be? My unhumble opinion? Open your window & stick your hand out.

Thanks Chad

The reason for putting the windows down is that if they break in an accident most of the glass is contained in the door and saves the clean-up crews time.
