What is up with the flashing lights in the rollhoop?

They are 'push to pass' lights that allow the engine another 400RPM -- each driver gets five 'bullets' for the race. Each time one is used, a light goes out alerting the crowd (and competing teams) to know how many remain. Kinda cool I guess

That's what I was going to guess they were, must have gotten the idea from Mariokart
