Default Audi Q7 as Tow Vehicle???

Guys,

I have searched and didn't find what I was looking for...

The wife and I share an Audi A4 and a '06 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi (which I use as my tow vehicle). Now the wife wants to get the Audi Q7 and I would like to keep the A4 for daily commuting, but want to see if anyone has had experience using the Audi Q7 as a tow vehicle.

My towing package is a Trailex open lightweight trailer and the 964. Total trailer weight tends to be right at 4,000 lbs loaded and I put another 150lbs into the back of the Jeep when heading to the track.

Audi rates the Q7 (with all engines) at 5,500 lbs towing capacity and up.

Anyone with any experience?

Thanks,

-Skip

I did it with a 2.7T Allroad from 2001 to 2003 without any problem so the Q7 should be just fine

Sounds great to me.

You're looking at the 4.2 V8, right?

Or have you looked at a Touareg with the V10 TDI, that thing's a monster!

I've pulled Bugs with my old Eurovan (VR6) before, which was close to the rating, and it was no sweat.
I think generally the ratings are a bit conservative....

The Q7/Touareg platform is much better than the jeep platform for towing so it should be fine. I had a jeep, it got better gas mileage (with 5.2 engine) but otherwise could not compare to the VW.

I considered the Q7 the last time I was car shopping but since I have a 22' enclosed with a 944 inside, its close to 7500 lbs which the rating on Q7 couldn't handle via specs. Ended up buying another Touareg V8 (2nd one) which tows my setup without issue.

The open trailex pulls like it isn't even there. I pulled a 993 on one with a 6 cyl Explorer for 50k miles with no problems. I expect you'll be fine, if you balance it properly. I have 2 friends who tow open trailexes with Touregs, and they are very happy.

I have a friend who uses the Q7 with his open Trailex and 993, plus all his "stuff" in the Q7. He is very happy with it. Not my first choice, but it seems to work. Just remember that the towing capacity has little to do with the engine and its ability to "pull". It is all about the brakes and chassis, and their ability to stop and handle the load.

We pulled an enclosed 24' aluminum trailer with a Cayenne S- an open trailer with a Q7 would be NO problem. We pulled a friend's open ATC aluminum trailer once with a spec Miata on it and it pulled like almost nothing was back there...

+1 We currently have a T-Reg as a Mom Mobile and Tow Vehicle. My car and rig are pushing 5,500lbs and it handles it fine. We are n the market currently for that same set-up as we are so pleased with the T-Reg but need the room that the Q7 offers due to number 3 (kid) on it's way.

Need a vehicle to tow the track car and WAY to VAIN to have a mini van in my driveway!

It's not so bad. I have one for a company vehicle and I guess because someone else is footing the ENTIRE bill,, I can deal with it.

I just saw the new Q5 at the Chicago Auto Show. Has a tow rating of 4,400 lbs, and my wife is wondering if we could pull a car with that. Hmm.
