Default How DIY are you?

Just curious to read the room here. Had a conversation with a friend yesterday, and it revolved around "what happens when you're too old to do everything yourself?" Well, for me I guess I quit.

And everything for me means pretty much anything but hardcore machine work (heads, crank polishing) and paint. I HATE bodywork. Cages in recent years I've only sub'd out because we've got a reasonably prized beyond-top-notch fabricator in Tony Colicchio locally.

Now I'm not sure if the poll is going to show up. If it doesn't, here are the options:

1-Total DIY: build, maintain, tow, prep myself
2-Mostly DIY: help with the serious stuff but sub out the engine/trans/cage, but I still tow/maintain/prep
3-Lite DIY: do most of the maintenance/prep and tow, but pay someone to do most of the serious stuff
4-Arrive And Drive Lite: my gear/my car, just let someone else get it there and use their services to assist me
5-Arrive And Drive My Car: show up with my gear, and pay for my car to be prepped and ready
6-Arrive And Drive Rental: show up with my gear to drive someone else's car

You're quick. Never posted a poll before so I had to remember how I phrased everything before I posted the poll part! OK, now it looks like we're working.......

I have moved from Total DIY, to Mostly DIY, to Lite DIY over the years (35). It is a combination of the cars becoming more complex and me having less time, patience, energy. This may be what drove me to spend a good part of today looking at 30+ year old Porsches for sale.

I wish i had the time and expertise, but with my work i travel so much that i had to fly directly to the track on multiple occasions.

I'm a 3.5. While I'm capable of doing the basics, I have no time. I let the shop do 96% of the work and I tow it out to the track and do the easier at-the-track work like sway bar and shock adjustments, playing with the electronics and data system, etc. I have at the track support for changing out failed parts.

it all depends on time, i have rewired my race cars, installed suspension, trannys, engines etc, when it came to cages i always had a professional install them. There was also a time i did not have the time i needed to make a race and would have someone do some work for me as well. I always towed my vehicle!

I'm in an interesting situation....since I do not own a tow vehicle or trailer or have parking for my race car...I have the shop handle all of that for me...& they charge me a VERY fair rate for delivery-track support-storage.....I also feel their shop rate for labor is more than fair at $75 an hour....its right at the point where I just tell them what to fix then worrying about getting the non street legal car back to my house so I can fix it (45 miles) then back to their shop.....

So it appears I am one of the rare "arrive and drive own car"

I put Total DIY, but in reality I'm probably mostly. I do all the work on the car, but for instance I am having the trans rebuilt by a pro, and having the motor cleaned up and light machine work done by a pro machine shop. But I'm building the motor myself and do all R&R work myself. I don't have the garage space nor the time for heavy shop tools. I have hand and air tools and that's my deal.

When I drove HPDE I drove the car to and from events, but now that the 944 is full race, I tow it on my own as well.

I'm self sufficient, but sometimes having the third hand helps!

Spec Miatas don't require a lot as they are pretty bulletproof (just jinxed myself didn't I?) but I do most of it. Been doing most of it since I had to rebuild the engine on my '66 Beetle beater while in med school of all things...figure after having my 914 for nearly 38 years I could take that apart and put it back together in my sleep...
If you want it done right, do it yourself...

I do quick and easy stuff like brake pad, rotor changes, seat installations, etc. and can do more complex stuff if I have the time. However, I normally just don't have the time to devote more than two or so hours for any DIY and would rather spend my hours either making money or relaxing.

I DIY after someone else has done it and posted it most of the time, but I will do what ever my tool box allows. obviously no alignment, although I have been trained to do it like 20 years ago. I would have to practice on someone car first.
