NOPE - found it. That was the BAKER shot during Operation Crossroads. From nuclearweaponarchive.org -

"This close-up view of the stem from Eneu Island, 10 seconds after detonation, shows water starting to escape the stem and fall back toward the surface. At its greatest extent, the water column was 2000 feet (600 m) across, with walls 300 feet (100 m) thick, and 6000 feet (2 km) tall, holding a million tons of water.

As water falls back from the stem, it forms a dense highly radioactive cloud called the "base surge". Stern of the USS Saratoga can be seen rising 43 feet on the crest of the first wave (94 feet high and 1000 feet from surface zero). Waves 6 feet high were seen 22,000 feet (7 km) from the explosion. "

I'm there for all three days for the Club Race. See you guys there!

If you haven't seen this, you should check it out. I see it come up on Discovery HD every now and then. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114728/

^^ Oh, I watch it everytime it comes on. Thanks for the pointer Kurt.

jrgordonsenior - I have a friend that did a dive trip to the Solomons to dive on a bunch of Japanese destroyers and other ships along the Slot. He had the same observations, pretty eery.

I'm in for all 3 days.

Fantastic! Since red and white will presumably run together, that means you could do some lead/follow coaching vs. only from the passenger seat? For me at least, "by example" is a good compliment to "by instruction".

jrgordon, love that avatar pic. Looking down onto the corkscrew requires quite a bit of elevation; was that from a tree or helicopter?

Also remember it's solo only. No green or non-solo blue. And we don't need a ton of instructors. And of course the economy sucks.

Neither. There's a ridge across from turn in to the corkscrew and I assume the shooter was just standing there. I agree it's a great shot and not only because I was leading....

I've made an agreement to rent a local Spec Boxster for the weekend so I'll be mixing it up with the Texas contingent. There should be 12 or so Spec Boxster's running. My GF and I are really looking forward to the weekend, it should be a blast....

mglobe... It was good to see all the 'addicts' I met in December. Keep in mind the mentor discussion we had for down the road.

VR... Thanks for the ride invite, that would be great! I'm not sure how much time, if any, they will let me loose from a corner but I'll try to take you up on the offer.

Everyone says you learn a lot working the corners, so I look forward to the experience.
