Helmet weights
Is there a list somewhere comparing helmet weights?
I am in the market for a closed face helmet and the only store I have been to in town that stocks SA2005's (so far that I know of) only has Simpsons. I tried on the Bandit and Voyager, both felt heavier than my cheapo Pyrotect open face. Both were comfortable by the way.
I am interested in helmets up to the Arai GP5/5W price range, and interested, if there is no list, in at least compiling one with member's here posting their helmet weights. Much appreciated.
So far:
Simpson
Voyager 3.5 lb
Bandit 3.3 lb
DevilRay 3.0 lb
Arai
GP-5W 3.0 lb

For the price range you are talking about the helmet that will feel the lightest is probably the Arai.
Naturally your Pyrotect openface will feel lighter than the full face for a number of reasons, mainly there is a lot less material out there.
There are a number of companies out there that have a carbon fiber helmet for the same price as the Arai but they honestly don't feel lighter. I had my hands on pretty much every helmet made last month and have to say that the other helmets that felt light were the HJC helmets as well.
I've always felt that Simpson helmets were on the heavy end as well as Bell.
As for compilation of weights I've seen some partial lists but nothing new in a while I'll see if I can dig up one of them. As I remember price didn't mean light weight. Outside of indoor karting I've never had an issue with the weight of a helmet straining my neck.

Comfort first, but IMHO, nothing comes close to a GP5 in that price range.

Comfort is the key. I love the way my Bell fits but could not stand the Simpson. The Simpson felt like it was too tight on the forehead. I keep looking at new helmets but live in BFE thereby making trying on different helmets a PITA. I'll probably end up buying another Bell just out of convenience/laziness.

I called Simpson to find out the weigths on the two helmets I tried and also on the other options, the Voyager weighs in at 3.5 lb and the Bandit 3.3 lb. I tried both in size Medium and the Bandit had the tighter feel. Their carbon fiber helmets weigh in at under 3 lb (Devil Ray and Sting Ray).
Surprisingly I liked the "sunglass" shape visor of the Bandit by the way.

OMP is another helmet that I really like but it just doesn't fit my head. I know many people who have tried on an OMP while being set on an Arai only to end up getting the OMP.
Shameless plug----> Some Bell helmets are now 20% off as they are phasing some models out. The M3, Sport III, Vortex and Mag 5 are all on the list.
The problem with posting weights like this is you aren't posting the sizes with them as well. Just an FYI

Since you sell the Arai's, do you know when the GP-6's are likely to debut, and if when they do there will be any "specials" on the GP-5's? (Can always hope).
Also,if you can dig up something on the weights that would be great.

According to the Stand21 web site, my F21 Air Force helmet weighs 1400 grams +/- 5% (3.08364 pounds). It *is* very comfortable.

I have the HJC Si-12 and it's under 3 lbs. Lighter then their all carbon one too. I needed to replace my sparco cuz it got banged up when my race car lost a fight with a wall. Night and day difference.
I tried the Stand 21 and the Arai GP5W and liked them quite a bit but the HJC fit my head the best (and a size smaller then the others)
Think about it, you'll be wearing your lid all day

I haven't been very successful in finding stores with auto-helmets here in Houston (pipe in please those that can help), but would trying same manufacturer bike helmets give me the same fitment impressions of the auto helmets (I know weights wont be comparible)?

It's all personal preference.
IMHO, fitment and safety main concern.
I'm very pleased with my Stand 21 Air Force.
Very light, comfortable and great support from Stand 21.
Here is one F/S on e-bay.
Price is right.

I also have the stand 21, great piece of equipment. You cannot beat that price on the e bay sale! If it's the right size it's a screamin' deal. I bought one of the stand 21 suits they have for sale, the seller is a porsche shop.
