That's the software I use. (MPEG Streamclip)

And while the possibilities are endless, there still seems to be some resolution loss converting from mpeg2 to h.264

Not all codecs are created equal, and that's especially true of formats like H.264 that spans everything from cell phone and hand held device video to BlueRay HD DVD to broadcast video. While a high spec H.264 encoder can knock your socks off, there are other that are nowhere in that league.

If you are seeing resolution loss, maybe you can adjust the settings in MPEG Streamclip for higher quality, or maybe that't the best the free encoder can do. Its probably good value for money at that :-)
