Cracked Windshield

Cracked Windshield
I am in the third year of DEs in my 06 C2S and the windshild is totally 'peened'. By that I mean small chips all over the glass. I came back from the Nordstern Clubrace DE at BIR with two rock chips and 6 inch long cracks..new windshield needed. When I get the new one, is there a clear protectant film I can put on it (like on my headlamps or NASCAR like) that does not distort vision? Please help.

Yes you can get mylar tear offs like the racers use.
I have 2 friends who track their street Porsche's and use a double layer and have good success with it.
Find a local race shop and see if they can steer you in the right direction.

I would pass on teh 2-ply and go straight for the 4-ply. With the 2-ply you have only room to "tear-off" one sheet. I had the 4-ply installed on my car and did it RIGHT after putting in (another) new windshield. This time all the rocks have taken their beating on the tear-offs and not the windshield. IIRC, it was about $400 installed. Well worth it.
ps. I haven't even torn the first ply off yet. Sure, it's nicked all to hell, but still, it doesn't affect my vision and it has the full strength of 4-ply. At $100 a sheet to tear off, if you don't have a sponsor like the NASCAR guys, then tearing one sheet off every time you come into the pits can get VERY expensive.

We went with the 4 layer tearoff from Cole Motorsports, I just installed it a couple weeks ago on the GT3 Cup, it was $275. They make 1, 2 and 4 layer tearoffs for 911, 944, 996 and several other kinds of sportscar applications... check out the installation video on the same page.

+1 on Lexan. The new hardened, scratch resistent Lexan windshields have been available for several years, like this one, which is also easy to fit:
