It's looking like I'm going to order an 18 ft rollback trailer and I'm waffling on the aluminum versus steel decision. I'll be putting a Boxster or a GT3 on it. Tow vehicle is an 1500 Avalanche.
Aluminum is only needed if you're towing near the limit and need to save weight. Maybe it's all in my head, but I like the strength of steel framed trailers, horses, cars ...etc.
Don't forget steel trailers rust and need repainting every few years is stored outside. Go with the aluminum.
I needed the weight savings and so went with an alum (a Trailex that I swear by, FWIW). But after having it in the driveway for these few years now, I really appreciate the fact that it won't rust. Think about it: one LESS thing to spend time/money to maintain.

Aside from weight savings if your tow vehicle is insufficient, does rust justify almost double the cost? If you dont want your steel trailer to rust, go pay one of those pickup bedliner places to spray it.
That's the same logic as trading in a SUV at a loss to buy a Prius to save gas.
The original poster has a tow vehicle plenty capable of towing a steel trailer. The extra $2000 he'd spend on an Al trailer could easily go towards driver development, tires, wheels, LED valve stems.. who knows.
bought used featherlite used it for 4 years then sold it at a profit. Plus there was a few other track guys wanting to buy. You could buy used aluminum for under 4 g and sell for that whenever you want. I am now going to upgrade to a enclosed. true you could buy a steel for 1200 to 1500 and possibly do the same. Just keep in mind more weight more gas.
that trailex sounds like a steel. I wish I was looking for one. what state is it in.
Assume CT Mike, it's in the latest CT Valley Region's PCA magazine - Challenge. Anyone that wants the exact ad with contact info let me know. I have NO affiliation or knowledge...
Trailex used will sell almost immediately. I know, I had been looking for a long while before I found mine and they disappear fast. Not to mention resale is incredible. If you're interested, I'd jump on it immediately.
