I'd assume you could just throw it in a suitcase and be safe. They do use radar detector detectors up there like Virginia. What detector do you have? The Bel STI cannot be detected (by the "Spectre"), but the V1, escort 8500, 9500 can be.

This is where I go for my Detector/Laser Jammer info-

http://www.radardetector.net/forums/

btw if you haven't checked out Laser Jammers give them a look, I just jammed a MA Statie doing about 80 on the way to work this morning on 93 north just south of the NH border, should have seen the look on his face . They are a necessary if you drive on the highway alot in states where they use Laser. My V1 might as well be a windshield decoration (or ticket alerter) on the Highway's around here (MA, Southern NH) all the staties run laser.

I don't think the detector detectors can identify one that is unplugged so you should be safe with it stowed in your luggage. If you do try to use one in Canada make sure not to slam on the brakes when it goes off. The cops look for that and its enough for them to stop you and search the car. Ex-Montrealer.

we were just in canada and had the detector unplugged in the glove box, no issues. if it is in operation you are in trouble.

I work in the radar detector industry, so I know a thing or two about this (also live about an hour and a half away from the Canadian border).

It is not JUST illegal to USE a radar detector in Canada. It is ALSO illegal just to have one in your car, because you can't prove to an officer that you were NOT using it. They will confiscate the detector and make you run over it with your own vehicle to ensure that it doesn't get used.

When I get to the border, I always just pull it off and put it out of site. Unplugged, a detector will give off no signals that are detectable by an RDD. Out of site to me means in a glove box or some other closed container. If you were to be pulled over and the officer saw it on your seat, on the floor, unplugged but on your dash, etc. you will be in violation of their laws.

this would give me some issues as I have a K40 hard wired into the car. The detector is behind the bumper but the jammer in in the hole that the licience plate should go!

Remind me not to go to Canada in the car!

Cassandra is right, mere possession of the device is illegal. Normally your device will be confiscated and you will be fined. Detecting devices are used regularly by the Ontario Provincial Police and many radar devices bleed off a weak signal which is detectable even after they are shut off. Many people have reported being stopped even though the device was shut off. How long this week signal bleed lasts after shut-off I do not know and I suspect is device dependant.

On the 400 series highways it is unlikely you will be stopped for speeds up to 129km/hr (80 mph)although the speed limit is officially 100 km/hr (62mph). I would always set the cruise at 128 km/h and never had a problem in the BoxsterS. Whatever you do not exceed 150 km/h (94 mph) or 50km/h (30mph) over the speed limit because new anti-street racing provisions provide for automatic seizure of your vehicle.

Just to re-iterate what Giacomo said:

In Ontario, if you are caught driving 50km/h over the speed limit you will loose your car for 7 days. No time to call a lawyer, or argue, or anything.

Also, once you exit the 401 at Waverly to drive to Mosport, watch your speed... Cops love handing out tickets to racers going to Mosport. Don't ask me how I know...

Have fun....

I drive no more than 10 over unless everyone else is going faster, like the Jersey Turnpike. I just drive by the speed traps; they don't even look. Same thing when I was up in Ottawa, 10 over was safe.

Errr, is that 10 over in both mph and kph? I.e., do you do 110 km/h in a 100 km/h zone or do you do 116 km/h in a 100 km/h zone?
