I am one of several "nutty" people asking over $20K for a fully prepared S2 with many new parts. Karl P must have been crazy asking $30K for his 89 S2 and I guess whoever bought it was totally loony. In my case, I finally have sorted the car out and plan to race it as long as I have it and am in no hurry to sell. In a few years when it is time to refresh engine, trans, and shocks and new harnesses to boot, someone would think they got a bargain for $14K.

I have to agree with you. I would not sell my car for 20K either. Not only do I have way more than that in it, there is nothing in this price range that can come close to keeping up to a well prepped and driven S2. Most of the cars that are able to pass me and others that have an S2 cost $75K or more.

BTW, Karl's car had "significant" engine work done on it and was probably one of the fastest S2's in the country.

I have to agree with Nader and Eddie. I think $25K for a fully sorted and competitive E class S2 is perfectly reasonable. I know I certainly wouldn't let my 968 go for any less than that.

Agreed. Whoever bought Karl's car got a great car for the money. I knew the car and it was nicely done. For reference, it is hard to buy a fully prepred SC for less than $35K and you need $45-50K for a 964.

Nothing said was said to be personal. The market will be saturated and is starting to head that direction. I am looking more for the partial project or "just about there" car that someone has no more time for.

Sadly, the $6000 car I found sold at the end of last week.

Just an FYI, I was able to buy my car with a busted cam chain (and other assorted parts) for $3500. To get the engine completely rebuilt as well as some other goodies was another $5500 so I had $9K into it just to get it on the road.
Then it was the slipery slope...Suspension, safety, lightning, wheels, tires etc, etc, etc and pretty soon you have close to 30 staring you in the face.

Now that the car is about as developed as it can get I can say that I have enjoyed the process but realize I could have probably done as you are looking to do for about 20K as a friend of mine did last year.

S2 is the 20 ball park. I know what it cost to get mine this far....

There's a red ex-Racer's Edge S2 from Louisiana in the classifieds with fresh engine by reputable local N.O. ex-Porsche tech, new transmission, fast car, front running wherever it has been driven, extra set of CCW's....well sorted.

Definitely buy a built car. I don't care what you think, you can't build one cheaper. Shop carefully, and buy one that someone is no longer racing, and his wife has told him "either the car goes or I do". Believe me, I know, race cars are NOT selling now. Also, you can't buy something from a rich guy, they don't have to sell, and that's what you are looking for, someone that really has to sell.

Be patient, a good, fast deal will come along. The more you narrow your search, the more chance you will pay too much.

Not to pile on but my 968 was over 15k when I bought it with 80k miles. I have put between 15k to 20k in the car and I have done a lot of the work. But when you add up cage, motons, RE bushings, complete M030 suspension, big brakes, lsd, aim dash, race seats, belts,etc, etc, etc you get there quickly. And I have a stock engine with just rod bearings and an oil p/u tube.

That is absolutely true. But if you shop carefully enough, you can buy it for 10-15K. Race cars are not selling now. If you buy one for 20-25K, make darn sure it has a winning record, against real competition. Talk to other people than the guy you are buying from in Class E or ITR (SCCA). The car's main competition will probably tell you the truth, unless they are selling their car also.

There are a lot of good cars out there, so be careful. What Jscaramella says is true, you can build one for $20 K, so again, be patient, you can buy a good one for $15-20K

If you have enough money to burn a wet mule, the go ahead and buy a car from someone like Racer's Edge. Carl is an honest guy, but you will pay a little more through him, because he is in business, and he has to make a profit. But, I will guarantee you, he will not screw you. His business relies on his honesty. So, if you have the money, buy the best. If you are like some of us, and run on a shoestring, there are good deals out there. Just be careful.

I have a 1991 S2 with 60,000 miles. Owned for the last 18 months. Used mostly for DE events with local PCA. Runs like a top and has suspension and engine maintenance work performed.

I'm not looking to sell but getting to the point where I may want to go with a 911. Let me know if you are still in the market.
